Director, Faculty Relations

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Employee and Labor Relations and working closely with the Vice Provost charged with oversight for faculty personnel matters, the Director, Faculty Relations provides guidance, consultation, policy interpretation, conflict resolution, and training on a variety of faculty personnel matters with the goal of maintaining compliance and consistency with University policy, promoting fair and equitable practices, and fostering a positive working environment.

This role will serve as a central, neutral resource for faculty relations, functioning in many respects like an ombuds who offers impartial guidance, helping faculty and academic leaders navigate complex personnel issues, and fostering constructive dialogue. The Director will coordinate closely with the Provost's Office, Employee and Labor Relations, and, when appropriate, the Office of General Counsel, providing objective support on disciplinary matters, grievances, and misconduct cases to ensure processes are fair, consistent, and transparent.

Key responsibilities include : counseling and guiding academic leaders and human resources officers on faculty grievances and faculty misconduct and disciplinary matters, conducting investigations into faculty-related concerns, advising on policies and procedures, providing mediation and conflict resolution services, and establishing systems to monitor faculty relations issues University-wide.

The Director will also be needed to at times advise University leadership on patterns related to faculty grievance and disciplinary matters.

Finally, this leader will provide training and guidance to academic leaders, faculty, human resource, and administrators on best practices, professionalism standards, and compliance with faculty relations policies. The goal is to help the University enhance a culture of respect and professionalism.

Qualifications

Required Education : Bachelor's Degree Preferred Education : Doctoral Degree or Juris Doctorate (J.D.) or Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration or other relevant field Required Experience : 10+ years of related faculty relations experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must include experience interpreting and implementing academic policies and procedures, managing personnel matters for faculty populations, conducting investigations, resolving interpersonal conflicts, and developing and implementing training programs. Preferred Experience : 10+ years of related faculty relations experience at a large, decentralized university Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities : Demonstrated knowledge of employee relations matters and best practices, including professionalism standards, conflict resolution, mediation, and managing disruptive behaviors effectively. Demonstrated ability to adhere to the key principles of fairness, equity, and impartiality in support of organizational goals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present effectively to small and large groups. Superior leadership and interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to gain strong credibility with faculty and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Strong project management and time management skills, including the ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals. Strong analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills within a complex, demanding work environment. Knowledge of human resources information systems. Knowledge of key principles in human resources and employment law.

Additional Information

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $180,000.00 to USD $220,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education / training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
