Job description

Sustainability Program Manager

This is an exciting opportunity to manage and coordinate key workstreams for REI's leading sustainability and impact programs. As a Sustainability Program Manager, you will help find and carry out decarbonization opportunities across the company to support REI's climate goals. You will work with the sustainability team and other departments to put sustainability and climate plans into action. This role requires experience in corporate sustainability, renewable energy, and decarbonization tactics. The role also needs the ability to work with many business divisions and a solutions-focused mindset. Success in this position depends on your ability to work well with many internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Manage general project responsibilities for enterprise decarbonization transactions and investments. This includes budget management, forecasting, and coordination with other Sustainability team programs.

Oversee REI's portfolio of environmental attribute credits (EACs), such as renewable energy certificates, carbon credits, and inset credits. Manage assets, partnerships, and contracts related to these credits.

Conduct research and data analysis to identify transaction opportunities and inform decision-making.

Support sustainability-related contract negotiations by working with internal stakeholders, such as legal, procurement, and finance. Coordinate with external partners to ensure agreement on environmental goals and risk mitigation. Secure favorable terms for renewable energy, carbon credits, and other environmental commodities.

Work closely with the sustainability carbon accounting and reporting manager. Make sure decarbonization actions match accounting and reporting standards.

Support teams and divisions across REI in evaluating, designing, planning, and executing broader impact and sustainability goals. Support energy efficiency and on-site renewable energy generation across US operations.

Use a design thinking and strategic mindset to work with others across REI. Help set division-level sustainability priorities, define problems, and create solutions to support enterprise-level sustainability goals.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

Experience managing environmental attributes across a global value chain. This includes procuring renewable energy, carbon credits, and other environmental attributes such as EACs, RECs, and Product Certificates.

5+ years of professional experience in sustainability or environmental disciplines, with specific experience in value chain decarbonization and net-zero tactics.

Experience implementing strategies and plans for enterprise-level sustainability and impact goals.

Experience with carbon (greenhouse gas) accounting, including the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, SBTi, and evolving sectoral standards and practices.

Proactive mindset and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Exceptional attention to detail supports tracking contract terms and environmental commodity transactions. This also helps with documentation for compliance, reporting, and audit readiness.

Ability to collaborate with others across teams to achieve business goals.

Skill in consolidating information from various sources, including feedback from others, to make sound judgments.

Consideration of the impact of conclusions and actions on internal and external customers.

Effective execution by using resources efficiently, meeting deadlines, and keeping others informed of work plans and progress toward goals.

Clear and accurate communication using various methods and in different situations.

Ability to act on opportunities and involve and influence others in achieving organizational goals.

Willingness to challenge the status quo, advocate change, and influence others to embrace change.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with renewable energy or carbon credit project development and project finance.

Experience with contract negotiations, drafting term sheets, and reviewing key contract terms.
