About the Role

A leading provider of specialized insurance solutions is seeking a Senior Underwriter to join its Disability Income Insurance division. This role focuses on underwriting policies for impaired risks—individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or those who have been declined by standard insurance markets. You'll be a key part of a nimble, high-impact team with the opportunity to influence product development and strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite complex individual disability income cases, particularly for impaired risk applicants
  • Review and analyze APS, physician reports, lab results, and medication histories
  • Approve or decline cases in a timely manner, applying clinical and financial judgment
  • Manage a pipeline of approximately 100 active cases
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders on product development and competitive market analysis
  • Contribute to special projects and strategic initiatives with senior leadership
  • Foster strong, collaborative relationships with top producers and external partners
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting policies, procedures, and data accuracy
  • Participate in the design and enhancement of underwriting tools and capabilities

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3–7 years of experience in disability underwriting (individual, not group)
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex medical and financial risk
  • Strong working knowledge of underwriting manuals, APS interpretation, and the brokerage marketplace
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent communication skills, with a collaborative and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Comfortable working independently and contributing to a small, agile team
  • Technical Competencies

  • Underwriting impaired life and disability risk
  • Risk assessment and case decisioning
  • Familiarity with competitive products and underwriting strategies
  • Project management and product development support experience preferred
