Job Summary

The Orthoptist analyzes and treats patients with dysfunctions of binocularity and/or ocular motility. Examines patients to diagnose and treat abnormal eye motor movements, partial vision, and determination of presence of fusion. Responsible for patient triage, patient care communications between visits, and working directly with the clinical teams. Also responsible for patients in the absence of the ophthalmologist. Role includes opportunity to participate in department research.

Pay Range

Minimum $39.49 Midpoint $52.33 Maximum $65.16

Candidate selected must be willing and able to travel to Orange and Mission Viejo clinic locations. Mileage reimbursement program available as applicable.

Experience

• Required: Minimum two (2) years of experience working as an Orthoptist.

Education

• Required: Bachelor’s degree in related field.

• Preferred: Bachelor's Degree and successful completion of a two year, nationally recognized accredited Orthoptic Program.

Training

• Required: Knowledge of medical terminology, infection control techniques, and age-related acuity levels. Must be competent in collecting and interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs.

Specialized Skills

• Required: Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a constantly changing environment. Ability to support all ophthalmology sites if needed. Works within scope of practice. Able to evaluate and document the patient/family response to care. Ability to set goals and judge results in accordance with the highest standards and respect; advance care through development of new ideas and technology; promote teamwork to achieve CHOC's mission; and understand and exceed customer expectations, effectively solve complex patient care and organizational problems, role model positive and professional behavior. Excellent organization skills; excellent critical thinking, judgment, and problem-solving skills. Willingness and ability to work independently as well as in partnership with physician partner.

Licensure

• Required: Basic Life Support (BLS).

• - Our team consists of two (2) Ophthalmologists, two (2) Optometrists, and two (2) Orthoptists and continues to grow.

• - Our department is fully staff and offers excellent resources, including Nextech EMR - designed specifically for Ophthalmology.

• - Our clinics saw 10k kids last year (surgical and non-surgical) and has 650 new patients waiting to be seen. Patients range in a wide variety of cases within a large strabismus practice.

Work Environments - Functional Demand:

Medium - High energy level Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Push/pull +/- 150-200 lbs. (Patients on bed, stretcher) Lateral transfer 150-200 lbs. (ie. Patient) .
