Job Summary : Director, Safety (HSE)

Location : Lorton, VA (Travel-Based)

Summary :

We are seeking an experienced and safety-driven Director, Safety (HSE) to oversee all aspects of our health, safety, and environmental programs across commercial roofing projects in Virginia, Washington, DC, Maryland, and North Carolina. This full-time position requires regular travel to project sites and offers an excellent opportunity for a proven safety leader to drive company-wide safety excellence.

The Director, Safety (HSE) will take ownership of developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety management systems that ensure a zero-incident environment. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in construction or roofing safety, the ability to lead field teams, and a proactive approach to risk prevention. This role reports directly to executive leadership and works cross-functionally with project managers and field operations teams to promote a culture of accountability, safety awareness, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities :

Develop, implement, and maintain company-wide safety policies, procedures, and training initiatives in compliance with OSHA and industry standards.

Conduct regular job site audits and inspections to ensure safe operations and adherence to all safety requirements.

Facilitate safety orientations, toolbox talks, and continuous training sessions for field personnel and supervisors.

Investigate and document safety incidents, identifying root causes and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Manage and maintain safety-related reports, logs, and compliance documentation for internal and external review.

Partner with project managers, superintendents, and crew leaders to identify potential hazards and implement mitigation strategies.

Enforce the proper use of PPE, fall protection systems, and hazard communication practices on all job sites.

Lead emergency planning initiatives and coordinate response drills and incident management exercises.

Stay informed of evolving safety regulations, industry benchmarks, and best practices to continuously improve safety performance.

Represent the company in safety meetings, audits, and client discussions regarding HSE standards and compliance.

Required Qualifications :

Minimum 8 years of experience in construction safety management (commercial roofing preferred).

In-depth understanding of OSHA, EPA, and other environmental safety regulations.

Proven leadership ability with strong organizational and communication skills.

Proficiency with safety documentation tools and digital reporting systems.

Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to regional job sites.

Preferred Qualifications :

OSHA 30-hour certification.

First Aid / CPR certification.

CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) credential.

Prior experience overseeing HSE programs in commercial or industrial construction environments.
