INVESTIGATOR / K-9 HANDLER

Salary : $40,000 per year

Position Summary :

  • Under the general direction from the elected District Attorney and under the direct supervision of the Cameron County District Attorney's Office Special Investigations Unit Commander. The purpose of this position is to perform general police duties specifically with a specially trained and certified police canine. Enforcement of state, local and federal laws relating to public safety and welfare and related law enforcement work is required. Specific tasks associated with this position include but are not limited to tracking, article searches, building searches, illicit substance odor detection, search and rescue, apprehension, and other areas according to the assigned role and training of the police canine.

General Duties :

  • Handle sensitive criminal (and occasionally non-criminal investigations) which come under the jurisdiction of the Cameron County District Attorney.
  • Performs law enforcement duties in support of the Cameron County District Attorney's Office Special Investigations Unit as well as other duties and tasks as required.
  • Duties include patrolling the county, protecting life and property. Perform routine law enforcement duties and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer questions; and maintain documents and records.
  • The ability to work on assignments outside of normal 8am-5pm office hours, including weekends, as requested by the District Attorney's Office Special Investigations Unit.
  • Protect and serves the citizens in Cameron County and protects property; patrol Cameron County and maintains order; enforce State, County and Federal Law.
  • Position Responsibilities : (The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this job position. Additional tasks related to the type of work of this job position may be assigned as necessary. )

  • Performs vehicular patrols within Cameron County; controls traffic; assists motorists and persons in distress; issues traffic summonses, warnings, and citations; pursues, apprehends, and detains criminals, suspects, and traffic violators.
  • Interviews complainants, victims, witnesses, and suspects in accordance with criminal investigation procedures; gathers, summarizes, and formats case information; interprets applicable state statues and municipal ordinances.
  • Documents incident reports; maintains records required for legal processes of court; serves as a witness in court proceedings.
  • Cooperates with law enforcement officials of other state, local, and federal agencies in investigations.
  • Investigates crimes, incidents, conducts surveillance, collect documents, evidence and prepares investigation reports, secures crime scenes, monitoring activity and controlling access to area, ability to maintain contact with confidential informants.
  • Strictly follows policies and procedures .
  • Attends and conducts meetings as required.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of assigned county vehicles and equipment.
  • Attends periodic training sessions, maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms, canine handling, and other issued police equipment.
  • Maintains on-call schedule and responds promptly for emergencies and incidents where canine functions are required.
  • Maintains a high level of training and individual readiness in canine handling.
  • Provides safeguards for the assigned police canine's well-being, including, but not limited to, proper diet, obedience, proper socialization, shelter, exercise, companionship, and veterinary care.
  • Operates various types of officer equipment such as computers, printer, calculator, radio equipment, telephones, fax machine, copier, camera, etc. Operates / uses a variety of police equipment including police vehicle, firearms, etc.
  • Uses office and computer supplies, restraining devices, protective gear, and a variety of police materials and supplies.
  • Adheres to Cameron County policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge required :

  • Modern office practices and procedures
  • Filing and record keeping criminal justice systems
  • Operations of standard office equipment (including fax machines, copiers, and computers.)
  • Routine office software (including word processing, databases, e-mail and internet access.)
  • Conduct criminal investigations and background checks.
  • Ability to :

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing (i.e. correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar).
  • Communicate effectively orally in Spanish.
  • Read and understand legal documents related case materials.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Accomplish the assigned workload in a timely manner.
  • Be an independent thinker with a positive team-player attitude.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other law enforcement agencies and the public.
  • Education and Experience

  • High school diploma required.
  • Minimum of (2) years of experience as a Peace Officer performing law enforcement duties.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification is required
  • Physical Ability

  • Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling of objects and materials of heavy weight (50 - 100 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Environmental Hazards :

  • The job risks exposure to unknown / uncontrolled environmental hazards.
  • Sensory Requirements :

  • The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, and color perception.
  • Other Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :

  • Must hold an active TCOLE Peace Officer Certification.
  • Must have a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License and an acceptable record.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • This is not a Civil Service covered position.
