Prosecuting Attorney

Overview

Prosecuting Attorney position at Salt Lake County. This role involves performing entry to senior level legal work in the District Attorney's Office, applying professional judgment in the preparation and presentation of cases.

Responsibilities

• Review investigative reports and screen requests for prosecution to determine validity of facts.
• Meet with law enforcement officers, complainants, victims, and witnesses for screening decisions as required.
• Prepare or direct the preparation of screening worksheets, fact sheets, informations, declinations, arrest warrants, or summons.
• Prepare or direct the preparation of search warrants and investigative subpoenas.
• Review case files in preparation for trials and hearings; coordinate with officers, citizens, and expert witnesses to determine evidence.
• Assess strengths and weaknesses of cases, negotiate plea agreements within office policies and procedures.
• Prepare cases prior to court appearances; research laws pertaining to case facts; prepare witnesses for court appearances.
• Appear in appropriate courts, conduct trials or hearings, and present evidence and arguments as an advocate for the County and / or State.
• Maintain current knowledge and skill in all phases of trial, including rules of procedure and evidence.
• Prepare judgments, orders, findings of fact, and conclusions of law as directed; review for appeal and file necessary appeals to protect the County's and State's interests.
• Participate in office training and continuing legal education; provide educational services and trainings to law enforcement and the public within applicable policies.
