Director of Investment Research

Harrison Gray Search has partnered with a prominent Boston-based multi-family office and investment advisory firm that diligently provides highly bespoke investment, financial, and planning solutions for a select group of sophisticated individuals, family offices, and institutions around the world. The firm advises on approximately $10+ billion in assets.

The Director role's primary focus is to lead investment manager diligence (including hedge funds, private equity, venture, mutual funds, SMAs, etc.) covering both investment and operational aspects. This role is also engaged with liquid, private, and direct investments, options strategies, ad hoc research, and operations for the firm’s Research Team (TFRT). The Director will support the TFRT junior staff in project management and reporting for investment research presentations. This position requires exceptional problem-solving skills, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to translate complex AI-driven analyses into clear strategic recommendations for Executive Management and Portfolio Managers.

Primary Responsibilities

Identify and conduct due diligence on global equity managers that best meet the needs, performance objectives, and risk tolerance of the firm's clients.

Analyze and support fund administration and organization for various investment vehicles and projects.

Maintain business relationships with industry participants and collaborate with colleagues to develop recommendations for the Firm and its clientele.

Complete written research used by clients and colleagues to support investment decisions. This includes concise commentaries, in-depth due diligence reports, and other periodic research pieces.

Lead responsibility for the completeness and integrity of fund data, ensuring information used by the Family Office Management Team (FOMT) is current (e.g., fund description, recommendation, and fund documents).

Initiate and complete research independently, and support analyst(s) and intern(s).

Mentor and assist the junior staff as needed.

Collaborate with the investment research and portfolio advisory team to evaluate market trends across regions and strategies, and prepare highly analytical and professional findings for colleagues and clients.

Requirements

Education : A Bachelor's degree is required. A postgraduate degree in Finance, Economics, or Statistics is preferred, and advanced degrees / certifications such as CFA, MBA, CPA, JD, or CFP are highly recommended.

Experience : 5+ years of experience conducting quantitative or capital markets research in investment management or a closely related field. Experience identifying themes and sourcing funds is needed. Experience with private and direct investments is not critical initially.

Work Environment : This is primarily an in-office role, designed to foster close collaboration, creativity, and real-time problem-solving across the firm’s business units. Occasional non-traditional work (nights and weekends) will be required under tight deadlines. Minimal international and / or local travel may be required.

Skills

Demonstrated ability to write and present on technical topics in a clear, engaging, and effective manner.

Technical fluency in AI applications, leveraging data-driven insights to assess investment opportunities, operational efficiencies, and competitive positioning.

Computer programming skills, including the use of spreadsheets and statistical packages.

Must be able to accurately and appropriately define and articulate relevant and complex research topics to a broad audience.

Must be able to organize work effectively and efficiently to meet deadlines and provide prompt service to firm clients.
