Street Maintenance Worker

Employees in this class perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets. Work may involve asphalt patching; cleaning storm drains, catch basins, leaves and yard debris; flagging traffic; landscape duties such as trimming, weed eating and planting; and assisting in minor repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles. Work may involve driving a small non CDL trucks. Employees may work as back up in water and sewer and sanitation occasionally performing traffic control, digging, and other manual and semi-skilled tasks occasionally as needed for coverage. Employees are subject to hazards in streets and utilities maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, dusts, fumes, mists, oils, working around moving mechanical parts, vibrations, tight quarters, and narrow passage ways. Work around raw sewage is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under continuous supervision of a crew leader or equipment operator in accordance with specific instructions and within defined procedures. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for adherence to instructions and established standards.

Essential Duties and Tasks :

• Performs varied semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing City streets and driveways; prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching; digs, pours and fills holes with shovel; spreads, brooms and tamps asphalt to smooth and pack.
• Hand grades potholes in streets, ditches, and gravel in driveways.
• Cleans storm drains, ditches and catch basins using rakes, shovels and hands; may use bush ax and weed eater to clean ditches and right of ways; mows, trims, and performs landscapes tasks in right of ways; uses pitch fork to pick up debris; carries arm loads of debris to the truck and / or to debris piles deep in the right of ways; uses leaf vacuum machine to get up leaves.
• Sets up safety cones and signs and flags traffic around work sites.
• Drives small cab trucks to haul to and from work sites to transport equipment and supplies; operates asphalt roller; air hammer, and other light to medium unskilled equipment.
• Cleans weeds and crabgrass from roadways shoulders using shovels to break weeds loose from cracks.
• Assists in erecting and or repairing road signs.
• Assists with trimming limbs overhanging streets or in right of way using pole saws and hand clippers; occasionally may use chain saw.
• Assists Street Maintenance Technician in concrete work; mixes concrete; hands tools; assists with building forms, pouring and smoothing concrete.
• May assist in sanitation by riding truck, picking up and connecting roll out garbage containers, and in water sewer with varied manual tasks in digging with shovels, laying pipes, etc.
• Puts up holiday decorations and banners along city streets
