Our newest inpatient center for children with acute behavioral health needs is located at the CHA Somerville Campus. This facility provides caring and specialized support for children aged 3-12, adolescents aged 13-17, and those with neurodevelopmental disorders. The Center for Inpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatry is committed to delivering a transformative continuum of patient and family-centered care.

The 6 East and 6 West Child Unit is a secured psychiatric unit with 21 beds dedicated to children ages 3 to 11, emphasizing trauma-informed, patient and family-centered, and evidence-based approaches. Our multi-disciplinary team focuses on assessment, stabilization, and aftercare treatment planning, with a strong commitment to restraint reduction.

Job Purpose :

The Milieu Counselor plays a crucial role within our multidisciplinary team. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and structured environment while addressing the unique needs of patients in crisis within an inpatient psychiatric setting.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
  • Lead or co-lead therapeutic groups
  • Conduct safety checks and 1 : 1 meetings with patients
  • Accurately chart vital signs and notify the RN of any changes
  • Document patients' intake and output
  • Support patients with bathing, laundry, toileting, and room organization
  • Ensure nutritional and hydration needs are met
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by the charge RN

Qualifications / Experience :

  • High school diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent years of relevant human services experience
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Prior experience in human services or behavioral health strongly preferred; inpatient psychiatric experience is a plus
  • All newly hired candidates must successfully complete a job-specific physical test
