The main purpose of the Optometric Technician is to provide direct patient care in conjunction with the Optometrist by conducting pre-visit diagnostic screenings and tests, and to assist the doctor with the post-visit treatment plan implementation including assisting in selecting and measuring for frames and lenses, teaching patients how to care for and use contact lenses, coordinating referrals and making follow up appointments. Provides clinical and front desk support to the Optometrist provider(s).
Salary begins at $22.06 + per hour depending on experience.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs verbal interview with patient prior to visit with the Optometrist to determine concerns and reasons for their visit for communication with the provider prior to appointment.
- Prepares patient for vision examination; obtains patient history and symptoms and assists in screening / testing for vision, color vision, stereo vision, visual acuity, visual fields, extraocular movements, pupillary reaction, intraocular pressure, keratometry measurements as directed by provider, while using utilizing ocular testing equipment.
- Assists the Optometrist with several aspects of patient care, including exams.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular medications.
- Schedules referral appointments for specialists or further diagnostic workups.
- Performs special testing on various instruments within office as dictated by the provider.
- Performs front desk duties as needed to include greeting patients, answering phones, etc.
- Verifies and records patient insurance information. Completes prior authorizations when necessary.
- Collaborates with the billing team to ensure accurate billing for lenses, frames and contacts.
- Documents accurately and timely in the EHR.
- Instruct patients in the care and use of glasses or contact lenses.
- Assist patients in frame selection, taking accurate measurements for lenses and frames.
- Adjusts, repairs and modifies broken or damaged glasses when possible, and assists with ordering new frames if unable to repair.
- Calibrates and maintains equipment per manufacturer’s specifications.
- Receives supply orders and verifies accuracy, completeness, defects. Notify the patient when glasses are received and ready for pick up.
- Maintains inventory of materials and supplies, cleans instruments, stocks, supplies and cleans exam rooms and optical retail area.
- Knowledge of payment policy, explains and collects payment from patients.
- Participate in all the required annual training.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Education : Successful completion of an Optometric Technician program required.Years of Required Experience : 3+ years of experience working in Optometry required. A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of experience. Optician certification and / or training may be considered as relevant experience.Experience with systems, computer applications / software : EMR experience required, EPIC preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products preferred.Current certification with the American Optometric Association (CPO, CPOA, or CPOT certification) preferred.Benefit Statement
