The Department of Ophthalmology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist currently employs 23 faculty in a collaborative and congenial environment. The glaucoma division includes three glaucoma specialists and one faculty member with pediatric and pediatric glaucoma training. We have experienced steady growth in clinical and surgical volume that will support the addition of a full-time surgical glaucoma specialist to our team. We are a regional leader with established tertiary referrals and a large catchment area that encompasses all of Western North Carolina, as well as Eastern Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Moreover, we are one of the largest health systems in the country due to our strategic partnership with Atrium Health, now part of Advocate Health. As part of this strategic alignment, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, which is located in Winston-Salem, NC, serves as the academic core of the health system.
Our department currently trains four ophthalmology residents per class, as well as three vitreoretinal fellows and one cornea fellow. In addition, we plan to add a glaucoma fellow in the upcoming year. We interact with a large number of Wake Forest University medical students both through the general surgery clerkship and the 4-week elective in ophthalmology. Our faculty have ample opportunity to participate in resident and medical student education, and clinical research and industry-funded clinical trials. Our department also has a strong commitment to service. Members of our faculty, residents, and medical students participate in two international trips to Honduras each year, serve uninsured patients in a local free clinic, and conduct annual vision and eye health screening in the community.
