Schedule : 40 hour work week; Monday - Thursday 6 : 30 am to 3 : 30 pm; Friday 6 : 30 to 12 : 30 pm
Starting hourly rate : $32.53 with scheduled step increases (see union contract Appendix C-3)
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Foreman or Assistant Foreman, the Maintainer I performs a variety of maintenance, construction, and repair tasks on or for Town roads, bridges, facilities, sidewalks and drainage infrastructure. Responsibilities include operating trucks and equipment to transport materials, removing refuse, plowing / treating roads during winter weather events, mowing / trimming public green spaces and performing related public works functions as assigned. Work is carried out independently or with others, in accordance with established policies and procedures, while following all established safety protocols.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Operates light and / or heavy trucks and related equipment for hauling materials and plowing / treating roads.
- Conducts pre- and post-operation inspections as required by federal laws; fuels, lubricates, and services assigned vehicles and equipment; reports malfunctions to supervisors and / or mechanics.
- Operates equipment such as tractors, rollers and mowers for daily activities such as : pipe laying and repair, paving, road repair, turf mowing, infield grooming, roadside mowing and such other assigned duties.
- Performs manual work in laying of pipes, patching or resurfacing roads, and related construction or maintenance work, cutting brush, shoveling materials, etc.
- Uses hand and power tools to repair catch basins, clear culverts, install and repair fences, street signs, and guardrails.
- Assists with painting, rough carpentry, masonry, basic plumbing, basic electrical and sign maintenance.
- Operate light powered equipment such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, leaf blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chop saws and power brooms.
- Uses chainsaws, chippers, pole saws and similar equipment for brush and tree removal.
- Performs flagging duties on road and construction projects.
- Makes minor repairs to assigned vehicles and assists mechanics with major repairs.
- Complies with all applicable safety rules, regulations, and procedures as established by the Town, CONN-OSHA and Federal standards..
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of truck and equipment operation and maintenance.Ability to safely operate heavy dump trucks and other assigned equipment.Mechanical Aptitude and manual dexterity to operate equipment r and maintain equipment.Ability to perform preventative maintenance and identify the need for repairs.Ability to understand and carry out written, oral and diagrammatic instructions.Strong interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with coworkers and interact courteously with the public.Equipment Operation
Dump trucks, pickup trucks, and trailers.Mowing equipment, jackhammers, pavement saws, portable pumps, and chainsaws.Snowplowing and treating equipment.Ballfield maintenance equipment (i.e. : infield machines, seeders, aerators, etc.)Other equipment as assigned.Physical Requirements
Frequent walking, standing, lifting, and manual labor in varying and adverse weather conditions.Exposure to dust, dirt, grease, heat, cold, and other disagreeable factors.Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly, and more on occasion.Extended periods of driving and snow plowing required.Some stress may occur due to public interactions and emergency response requirements.Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.At least one (1) year of experience in construction, OR landscaping, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Special Requirements
