Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Radiological Protection / Chemistry Shift, ALARA, or Instrumentation Technician located at Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville , Nebraska. Position closes October 2, 2024 at 11 : 59 p.m. Central Time.

Position Summary

Radiological Protection Technician :

The major responsibility of the Radiological Protection (RP) Technician is to monitor and maintain the following as specified in the individual employee training plan : radwaste processing, decontamination, environmental controls, and personnel safety. RP Technicians perform radiation and contamination surveys thus protecting plant systems, the general public, and meeting regulatory requirements.

Radiological Protection / Chem Shift Tech :

This position's primary responsibility is to provide on-shift Operations crew support to the Radiological Department functions, including Chemistry functions. The purpose of this position is to provide protection of personnel and the environment from unnecessary radiation exposure, monitor and maintain strict control on liquid and gaseous effluents, spread of contamination, and ensure the safe handling of radioactive materials. The individual's employee training plan shall be developed to dictate the required cross-disciplinary skills this job will require. This position is responsible for maintaining their specified discipline's programs in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and Quality Assurance requirements.

Radiological Protection Technican - ALARA :

This position's primary responsibilities are to plan radiological work, develop radiological dose estimates, and track radiological exposures. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that work performed at the station will be completed keeping dose "As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)."

Radiological Protection Technican - Instrumentation :

This position's primary responsibilities are to perform calibrations as well as preventative and corrective maintenance on Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) radiation protection surveillance and monitoring instrumentation. Individual will handle radioactive sources and provide self-monitoring. Individual will utilize Radiological Protection (RP) instrumentation to assist in Radiation Protection Technician duties as assigned.

These positions are assigned to a position within the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) that requires response to the station when an emergency is declared. Assignment to one of these positions and a condition of continued employment will be the ability to arrive at the station to perform ERO responsibilities within 45 minutes of notification of an emergency.

Education, Training and Experience

Radiological Protection Technician :

Must be qualified to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) N18.1-1971 requirements. (Documentation of qualification is a condition of employment.)

Radiological Protection / Chem Shift Tech :

Twelve months experience as a qualified ANSI N18.1-1971 Radiological Protection (RP) Technician.

Radiological Protection Technican - ALARA :

Twelve months experience as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) N18.1-1971 qualified Radiological Protection (RP) Technician, six months of which is in ALARA.

Radiological Protection Technican - Instrumentation :

Twelve months experience as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) N18.1-1971 qualified RP Technician, six months of which is in RP instruments or a related field.

Must be able to qualify to the specific employee training plan and proceed through the progression plan developed for these positions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Radiological Protection Technician :

Provide protection of personnel and the environment from unnecessary radiation exposure, monitor and maintain strict controls on the spread of radioactive contamination, and ensure the safe handling of radioactive material.

Ensure compliance with standards, procedures, and the code of federal regulations. Operate in accordance with the regulations. Failure to comply may result in violations, enforcement actions, endangering the safety and welfare of the general public and the environment.

Document and maintain accurate records to provide a thorough documentation of equipment calibrations, radiation safety surveys, radiological analysis results, quality control documents, and the many other documents necessary to defend against future litigations or other documentation as demanded to fulfill the specific employee training plan.

Collect and analyze samples from various plant systems throughout Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) for quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Conventional and microprocessor equipment will be used.

Perform routine radiological surveys to evaluate the hazards in the workplace and / or hazards to plant equipment.

Radiological Protection / Chem Shift Tech :

Provide shift coverage to meet emergency plan requirements for monitoring radiological / chemical conditions to mitigate radiological emergencies. This includes providing radiological support for assessment activities in the Control Room and Simulator Control Room in support of the Operations crews. This position will become dual qualified in Radiation Protection and Chemistry and provide rotational support to the Operations shift crews.

Perform routine radiological surveys and / or chemical analysis. Provide controls and guidance for workers to perform tasks in areas with elevated hazards. Capable of evaluation of internal exposures to inhaled or ingested radioactive contamination, and to evaluate the respiratory protection and contamination control programs.

Maintain and direct a system which supports the inventory, issuance, calibration, performance testing and / or repair of the specified discipline's equipment and instrumentation. These systems should include records, schedules, methods, personnel, and traceability to the appropriate regulations and standards.

Collect and analyze chemistry and radiological samples from various plant systems throughout CNS for quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Conventional and microprocessor equipment will be used.

Radiological Protection Technician - ALARA :

Develop detailed radiological work packages which includes assessing radiological risk, developing dose estimates, and providing detailed ALARA critiques. This will at times require the individual to interact with various departments at the station to obtain information needed to complete the work package and to promote radiological work behaviors.

Provide information to station management to help in the development of station dose goals and collective radiation exposure reduction.

Utilize plant planning and scheduling software to obtain radiological and work order information and ensure proper scheduling of radiological work.

Analyze, purchase, plan, and implement shielding applications in support of dose reduction for the station.

Radiological Protection Technician - Instrumentation

Perform calibration, testing, and repair of radiation detection and sampling equipment.

Maintain RP surveillance equipment operable by performing timely troubleshooting and maintenance.

Document and maintain accurate records of instrumentation calibration and maintenance.

Continue to enhance and improve the RP instrumentation program through industry benchmarking and research initiatives.

In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Pay Grade - 14 Hourly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range : $46.03 - $58.69

Travel Required : Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
