Full Time - M-F 2am-10 : 30am

JOB SUMMARY

The Histologist assists with cutting, staining, and mounting specimens of human tissue to provide information on tissue and organ function, as well as the causes and progression of disease, in accordance with established laboratory standards and practices.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collect, process, and store surgical and cytological specimens.
• Enter patient, order, and technical information into the laboratory information system (LIS); print and organize cassettes.
• Prepare specimens, slides, and blocks for referral to outside laboratories.
• Maintain referral logs, process reports, and monitor pending cases.
• Maintain grossing area, frozen section room, and autopsy suite, including cleaning, stocking supplies, and preparing solutions.
• Perform technical procedures resulting in microscopic slide preparation.
• Create routine and special stains within established turnaround times to provide appropriate slides for microscopic evaluation.
• Operate laboratory equipment such as microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, staining equipment, and cover slippers to produce quality slides for examination.
• Operate immunostaining equipment and perform manual stains as needed to provide diagnostic-quality slides.
• Assist pathologists and pathology assistants with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsies.
• Perform and document quality control procedures in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission).
• Perform preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment, troubleshoot minor issues, and coordinate service calls as needed.
• Order and restock supplies and reagents, and discard expired materials according to policy.
• Participate in continuing education and training programs; assist in training new staff.
• Complete assigned tasks and special projects within designated timelines.
• Adhere to safety, infection control, compliance, and hazardous materials handling protocols.
• Participate in accreditation inspections and follow applicable regulatory guidelines.
