The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is seeking to hire two computer science/engineering/scientist student assistants to help support the Heavy-Duty Diesel Strategies Implementation Branch (HDDSIB). The student assistants will play an important role in implementing California's heavy-duty inspection/maintenance (I/M) program to ensure heavy-duty vehicles continue to operate in the field with low criteria emission levels. This heavy-duty I/M program, now called Clean Truck Check, is similar to California's light-duty smog check program, but for heavy-duty trucks. Desirable qualifications include familiarity with emissions equipment and on-board diagnostics.
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students. Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday Friday, between 8 AM 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Monday - Friday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
$20.00 - $32.54 per hour
Strong communication, organizational, critical thinking skills. Possess resourcefulness, perseverance, and be a quick learner and hard worker. Demonstrated ability to gather information from a variety of sources, evaluate and analyze information. Have knowledge on Excel and/or Access. Ability to synthesize and report information using Word and PowerPoint, and defend data and conclusions. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and persuasively orally and in writing and conduct themselves courteously and professionally in the workplace.
Knowledge of basic air pollution control, internal combustion engine operation, and vehicle on-board diagnostics. A background in coding and/or developing scripts to mine and analyze data sets. Assist in the performance of technical work with engineers and scientists related to the implementation of the heavy-duty inspection and maintenance program. Analyzing vehicular testing and repair data, manufacturer information, engine and after treatment technologies, and emissions data. Coordinate with other CARB divisions, the Bureau of Automotive Repair, and other federal, state, and local agencies as needed. Assist engineers and scientists in the performance of laboratory testing on vehicle testing devices and coordinate with device manufacturers on device development as needed. Prepare clear and accurate technical reports, and issue papers, letters, and documentation related to the activities described above. Assist engineers, scientists, and management with administrative and clerical tasks such as formatting reports, preparing handouts, and arranging meeting logistics. Perform other duties related to the work of the Heavy-Duty Diesel Strategies Implementation Branch such as reviewing documents, responding to correspondence, managing mailings, assisting with stakeholder outreach related projects and other projects as needed.
