To advance the mission and programs of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) by supporting the Finance Department through accurate, timely accounting and financial operations that help sustain ARL's lifesaving work.
As an Accounting Intern, you'll work closely with the ARL Finance team to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit accounting and financial operations. You'll assist with entering financial accounting data related to accounts payable into the ARL's financial accounting system and provide support for day-to-day accounts payable functions as needed.
You'll help with daily deposit processing and assist in generating invoices and tracking accounts to ensure accurate and timely financial records. You'll also support the reconciliation of monthly public spay/neuter reports in collaboration with the Veterinary Outreach Services Coordinator, gaining insight into how financial data supports ARL's veterinary and outreach programs.
Throughout the internship, you may assist with preparing additional financial reports for special projects and provide general support to the Finance Department as requested. In all tasks, you'll maintain confidentiality, follow the ARL's financial policies and procedures, and demonstrate a strong commitment to accuracy, organization, and professionalism.
You're currently enrolled in and pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or a recent graduate, and you're eager to apply what you're learning in a real-world, mission-driven environment. You bring strong attention to detail, excellent time management skills, and the ability to meet deadlines while working independently or as part of a team.
Previous experience with bookkeeping or accounting systems is preferred, and you're comfortable working with data entry and spreadsheets. You have a solid understanding of basic bookkeeping and accounts payable principles, are proficient with Microsoft Office or similar software, and communicate clearly and professionally with others.
Most importantly, you bring reliability, integrity, and an appreciation for how strong financial practices help support animal welfare and community impact.
This internship involves prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Work will take place in an environment where animals and common allergens such as pet dander, dust, and other airborne particles may be present. ARL offers a supportive, collaborative workplace where learning and accuracy are valued.
This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in nonprofit accounting while contributing to an organization dedicated to animal welfare. You'll develop real-world financial skills, deepen your understanding of how finance supports mission-driven work, and gain experience that will support your future career, all while helping ARL continue to provide care and second chances to animals in need.
