The County of Surry is accepting applications for the position of Paralegal to work under the direct supervision of the County Attorney. Performs paraprofessional and technical work in assisting the Surry County Attorney with legal research, administrative procedures and fulfilling other aspects of the County Attorney’s mission. An employee in this class assists the Surry County Attorney in conducting high level administrative, fiscal, and support duties requiring an understanding of laws, rules, regulations and services by performing a variety of administrative and technical functions. The employee performs a wide variety of office and support duties and serves as the first point of public contact. The employee must exercise considerable professionalism, confidentiality, independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in completing assignments and in handling difficult public contact situations requiring considerable tact.
Other Duties : Performs administrative office duties to relieve the attorney of operational detail, including maintaining files and filing system, drafting, reviewing, and approving for form of various legal documents, subject to County Attorney review. Prepares routine opinions on regulations, procedures, and operations of the County for attorney’s approval. Addresses complaints and inquiries of a legal nature from the public. Research laws and legal precedents. Other duties as required. Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Thorough knowledge of legal office practices, procedures and techniques. Thorough knowledge of legal terminology and spelling. Thorough knowledge of departmental functions, organization and policies. Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices utilized in legal research. General knowledge of municipal law, civil law and procedure, and / or the criminal justice system. Ability to maintain involved office and legal records; ability to organize and perform work independently; skill in the use of word processing and / or transcription equipment; ability to interview and work effectively with witnesses. Ability to use court electronic filing systems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, supervisors, employees, outside government agencies, and the general public. High school diploma and Paralegal Certification, Associate’s Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree and experience in performing delegated, substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary : Grade 65 $38,235 - $63,097
