  • What Your Job Will Be Like

    We are seeking a R&D S&E, Aeronautical Engineer to help with our high-fidelity aerospace simulations. As a simulation engineer in the Flight Systems and Software department you will work with a multi-disciplinary team to create software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop simulations for a variety of aerospace platforms.

    On any given day you may be called upon to do some combination of the following activities :

  • Create or modify subsystem models in Simulink using ground test data, mathematical models, physic-based models, or a combination thereof
  • Integrate embedded flight algorithm software into Simulink models using S-functions
  • Create and debug communication between multiple avionics components and a simulation computer
  • Implement uncertainty models or failure modes into the simulation
  • Iterate with navigation, guidance, and control algorithm experts on simulation results and analysis methods
  • Implement and maintain automated testing for software releases
  • Maintain commonality and traceability of various versions of a simulation across networks and programs
  • Mentor early career staff on technical approaches to modeling, simulation, and test development
  • Salary Range

    $114,000 - $227,500

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
  • Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q-level security clearance.
  • Qualifications We Desire

    The ideal Aeronautical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following :

  • Graduate degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience in applied aerodynamics, flight mechanics, or trajectory simulation with application to the design, modeling, simulation, optimization, and analysis of aerospace flight systems.
  • Experience with the capabilities, use, and application of MATLAB, Simulink, Python, C / C++, or other modern programming languages and repositories in technical analysis / computing and software development.
  • Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced / schedule driven environment.
  • Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience :

  • Extensive experience with Simulink & MATLAB.
  • Experience deploying simulations to real-time host platforms (e.g., Speedgoat, iHawk).
  • Experience emulating hardware on FPGAs.
  • Experience with system identification and modeling dynamical systems.
  • Familiarity with embedded sensors and relevant communication protocols.
  • Experience with C / C++, Python, and Git.
  • Familiarity with CI / CD build & test tools (e.g., Cmake, GoogleTest).
  • Demonstrated experience leading simulation teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers.
  • Active DOE Q security clearance.
  • About Our Team

    The Flight Systems and Software Department creates navigation, guidance, pointing, and control algorithms and software for various flight systems, including hypersonic, nuclear deterrence, and space applications. We have experience in real-time flight software engineering, post-processing trajectory reconstruction, signal processing, simulation development, and analysis of testing results for a wide variety of navigational sensors and test modalities. 5323 owns two labs where benchtop, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop testing of flight software may be accomplished. Our activities span the range from applied research to fielded programs of record.
