Job description

Departmental Analyst

The Michigan Department of Treasury is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented professional to independently research, analyze, and respond to the most complex tax inquiries related to Sales, Use, and Withholding (SUW) taxes, Corporate Income Tax (CIT), and Michigan Business Tax (MBT). This position plays a critical role in ensuring the fair, consistent, and accurate application of Michigan tax statutes and administrative guidance.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Conduct in-depth research and provide expert analysis on complex SUW, CIT, and MBT issues.
  • Assist in the interpretation and application of Michigan tax laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Respond to technical inquiries from taxpayers, tax professionals, and internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and present cases for informal conferences before the Hearings Division.
  • Develop and articulate Treasury's position on complex tax matters.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Treasury staff.
  • Analyze the impact of new legislation and provide recommendations to Treasury leadership.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of tax forms, instructions, and policy documents.
  • Review and assist in the analysis of legal complaints and litigation matters involving business taxes.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have :

  • Strong analytical and legal research skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • A deep understanding of Michigan's SUW, CIT, and MBT tax structures.
  • Experience interpreting and applying complex tax laws and regulations.
  • The ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.

Work must be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position prior to being appointed to the position. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed. Hybrid remote work is available on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and onsite work is required on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
