Schedule & Hours : Will work no more than 100 hours per year

About the Fund and Program

The Fund for Public Health in NYC (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. In partnership with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives and collaborates with government and private sectors to accelerate demonstration projects and implement public health solutions.

About the Program

Maternal mortality is a key indicator of health; the NYC DOHMH has conducted enhanced surveillance for maternal mortality since 2001. The NYC Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) was formed to conduct multidisciplinary reviews of pregnancy-associated deaths among NYC residents and others linked to NYC. In recent years, disparities have been observed (e.g., Black non-Hispanic women bearing a higher burden of maternal mortality).

About the Role

The Family Interviewer (Spanish-Speaking) will work part-time within BMIRH and report to the Deputy Director of the MMRC, collaborating with the MMRC Co-Chairs. The role involves developing interview materials, identifying and contacting participants, obtaining informed consent, conducting interviews via telephone or video in Spanish, and submitting interview materials to the DOHMH MMRC Operations team.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of interview materials and protocols in collaboration with the DOHMH MMRC Operations team.
  • Review interview protocol and best practices for qualitative interviews.
  • Sign confidentiality agreements as required.
  • Identify family members or next of kin to interview; establish contact, assess readiness, schedule interviews; maintain outreach tracking.
  • Obtain informed consent prior to interviews and conduct up to 25 interviews in Spanish lasting 1-2 hours via telephone or video conference; provide a resource guide to participants at the end of each interview.
  • Transcribe notes or audio recordings into clear summaries within 7 days of each interview; attend monthly MMRC meetings and participate in progress discussions as needed.
  • Attend meetings with the DOHMH MMRC Operations team to discuss interview progress as requested.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in Spanish (required).
  • Prior experience conducting interviews or other qualitative data collection.
  • Degree in or experience related to supporting births, social work, psychology, sociology, public health, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated understanding of social determinants contributing to maternal mortality.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality laws.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; trauma-informed, person-centered practice.
  • Crisis intervention skills and ability to de-escalate situations; provide critical support.
  • Experience engaging people from diverse linguistic, cultural, or economic backgrounds.
  • Flexible schedule and ability to conduct interviews during non-business hours as needed.
  • Ability to work independently and with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to take detailed notes and prepare well-written, organized reports based on interviews.
