Title: Custodian - 2nd Shift
Department: Facility and Grounds
Assignment: Custodian 12 MO
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Building Manager
Location: Highland Park High School
Pay Rate: $20.25/hour with a 2nd shift annual stipend of $300 annually

Summary: This is a second shift role with hours 3:00pm to 11:00pm.

The Custodian is primarily responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy physical environment in our facilities, thereby ensuring full educational use of school facilities for students, staff, parents, and the school community.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Two years of custodial experience preferred
  • Experience maintaining effective and professional working relationships with students, staff, supervisors, and school community members
  • Proficient in the proper handling of chemical cleaners and supplies, adhering to manufacturer's instructions
  • Works independently.
  • Demonstrates a cooperative and helpful demeanor.
  • Highly professional language and demeanor.
  • Positive attitude and spirit of collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be able to work safely in a pool environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions in English
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education will be considered.
Essential Functions:

The criteria indicated below are intended to describe various types of work that may be performed. The exclusion of specific responsibilities does not prohibit them if the work is similar, related, or a logical task of the position.
  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc. in the building.
  • Maintains building and grounds security in the building each school day.
  • Restocks disposable items and provides head custodian with inventory usage and data.
  • Assist the visiting public, utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment.
  • During the summer months, this position will work 1st shift 6:30am - 3:00pm
  • Required to participate in the annual state-required professional development classes.
  • Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
  • Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
  • Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
  • Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels; for positions within on-campus residence halls, responsible for reporting concerns related to on-campus residents.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Participate in on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures.
  • Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
  • May provide vendors with access to areas for cleaning and may answer basic questions.
  • May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Language Skills

Communicates clearly both in oral and written format with all constituents of the District 113 community. Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups. Apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Mathematical and Technical Skills

Must be able to do basic math with addition, subtraction and division. Using the software to clock in/clock out and request time off is also needed.

Reasoning Ability

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of verbal and written instructions and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.

Contacts Outside Your Own Department:

Build positive relationships with constituents of the District 113 community that includes, teachers, school staff, administrative team, Board of Education, guardians, students, and private providers.

Physical and Mental Demands:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, write, type, speak, listen, and taste or smell.

  • The employee may occasionally be required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach or crawl.
  • This job has considerable physical activity and requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of a job.
  • The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Specific psychological demands of this job include the ability to remain calm under stress levels associated with job demands, along with constant contact with students, colleagues and the public.
Working Conditions:
  • In the work environment, this role is regularly exposed to office environmental conditions and also may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with regular exposure to loud classrooms, hallways, cafeterias or sports venues.
  • The employee is regularly required to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and staff in addition to meeting multiple demands from several people.
  • The employee may be asked to work irregular or extended work hours, which may include evenings or weekends.
  • Performs other related duties as may be necessary and assigned by the Building Manager and/or School Principal.
  • May be required to work during school holidays, weekends, days, evenings and overtime during inclement weather or in emergency situations as directed by the Building Manager
Safety:

As a part of the District workforce, this role is responsible for being aware of, modeling and contributing to the maintenance and implementation of all District safety policies and procedures. The role positively contributes to the safety, well-being and work output of students.
