The Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) participates in high-quality, patient-centered care by providing continuous observation and monitoring for high risk patients. In collaboration with the patient care team, the PSA ensures the patient environment is free of obstacles and minimizes risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm. The PSA may also assist with basic activities of daily living.

- Assists nursing staff with tasks such as transporting patients, delivering equipment and supplies, transporting specimens, delivering patient trays, answering phones, and assisting visitors when not providing direct patient observation.
- Participates as an active member of the healthcare team, promoting teamwork and maintaining professionalism.
- Serves as a resource to department staff, students, and volunteers, contributing to quality patient care and assisting in the orientation of new staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills, ensuring clear understanding among patients, physicians, and colleagues.
- Establishes a safe patient environment by utilizing fall prevention protocols, infection control measures, self-harm prevention, and performing regular room assessments.
- Monitors and reports any changes in the patient's physical and emotional condition promptly while maintaining direct observation.
- Intervenes to prevent patient self-harm or harm to others and seeks immediate assistance for escalating incidents.
- Ensures patient safety and accompanies patient during transportation, testing, and procedures away from the patient's normal environment.
- Creates clear and accurate documentation of patient status and activities during shift.
- Maintains a direct line of sight with the patient at all times, including during family or visitor presence.
