Nurse Practitioner I

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

The Movement Disorders Division at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking to recruit and train a Nurse Practitioner I to provide clinical care for and to conduct research in persons with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.

Responsibilities

• Attend all of the educational activities of the division including but not limited to video rounds, CPC, journal clubs.
• Coordinate the clinical practice of the movement disorders division and its patients.
• Provide support in guiding, shaping and overseeing scheduling and medical needs of movement disorders patients while interacting closely with multidisciplinary team members.
• Prescribe medication, equipment, write referrals, prepare letters of medical necessity, assist patients in their interactions with insurance providers; choose, obtain and maintain equipment.
• Trained to perform lumbar punctures, place intravenous lines, draw blood, and administer novel intrathecal and intravenous treatments to movement disorders patients.
• Trained to test and adjust deep brain stimulation equipment.
• Responsible for providing consultations to inpatient movement disorders patients, be required to attend inpatient family meeting and participate in transition care plans for patients with movement disorders.
• Duties include overseeing preauthorization and prescription of movement disorders treatments as well as follow-up to schedule test and obtain results.
• Assist in execution of movement disorders clinical and research initiatives related to a number of diseases that include but not be limited to Parkinson disease, dystonia, multiple system atrophy, ataxia and essential tremor are the signature initiatives of the research portfolio.
• Work collaboratively with principle investigators and coordinators to oversee medical research needs and assist with procedures (including blood draws, infusions, and intrathecal injections) that may be required according to specific research protocols
• Becoming familiar with maintaining compliance with existing policies and procedures at Columbia University, the IRB, FDA, NIH, and NYPH that relate to clinical research conducted at the movement disorders division in concert with study coordinators.
• Responsible for assisting with grant writing and design for projects, data analysis, preparation of original articles for publication, or presentation at conferences.
• Establish good rapport with patient and families as well as the clinical, research, and administrative teams.
• Other related duties as assigned / required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience
• Current NP license in New York State

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's of Science in Nursing
• DNP preferred
• Two (2) years of related NP experience
• Experience with neurological diseases preferred
• Highly motivated, interested in movement disorders with excellent interpersonal skills.
• Good writing and communication skills are essential.
• Bilingual English-Spanish preferred

Other Requirements

• Mastery of spoken and written English required
• Must be organized; attention to detail is required
• Computer skills are required including proficiency with MS-Word, MS-Excel, Outlook, and MS-PowerPoint.
• Receive training by movement disorders physicians and other members of our multidisciplinary team to assess and oversee care of patients with movement disorders with the goal of independent assessment patients both for clinic and research assessments. This training, depending on applicant's prior experience, may range from 6 months to 18 months.
