Job Description

South Bend Orthopaedics is searching for a full-time certified or registered Medical Assistant.

Job Summary

Medical Assistants (MAs) contribute to the positive image of South Bend Orthopaedics (SBO). MAs are responsible for assisting physicians in general orthopedics, spine, hand, podiatry, pain management, and rehabilitation specialties. They provide outstanding, professional customer service and maintain courtesy in all interactions with patients and team members. Their duties include but not limited to rooming patients, taking vitals, documenting patient information, assisting with in-office procedures, preparing exam rooms, and providing general clinical support to providers.

Essential Functions

  • Supports daily efficiency by assisting physicians in staying on schedule.
  • Collaborate with POD teammates to ensure smooth clinic operations and excellent patient care.
  • Support POD Team by creating an efficient and cohesive team.
  • Assist patients with mobility, dressing, collecting specimens, and preparation for exams or surgeries.
  • Collect patient history, performs screenings, assists physicians and physician assistants with procedures, and follows internal protocols.
  • Prepare and draw injections.
  • Prepare patient charts and provide instructions to patients and their families.
  • Send and receive medical records; obtain lab / x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, and other relevant documentation.
  • Complete forms and requisitions as required.
  • Manage and update electronic medical records (EMR) accurately.
  • Set up instruments and equipment according to departmental protocols.
  • Clean and sterilize exam / procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits.
  • Follow HIPAA guidelines for the maintenance and privacy of medical records.
  • Order, store, and restock medical supplies and exam rooms.
  • Respect and promote patient rights and responds appropriately to emergency codes.
  • Maintain a collaborative and team-oriented attitude.
  • Participate in care team meetings to discuss patient care and clinic improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Must demonstrate emotional maturity and stability to approach highly stressful or sensitive situations in a calm and rational manner.
  • Must adhere to ethical standards of conduct and comply with all applicable state and federal laws.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively—verbally, nonverbally, and in writing—with patients, families, colleagues, healthcare providers, and the public.
  • Must be able to work in both medical office and exam / procedure room settings.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, and walk at a moderate pace for extended periods; must be able to view computer screens for prolonged durations.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to occasionally crouch, stoop, or kneel to assist patients.
  • Must be able to use arms to reach and hands to perform manual tasks.
  • Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in an environment exposed to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinical setting.
  • Requires standing or sitting for up to 8 or more hours per day, including computer input and responding to phone inquiries.
  • Requires working at a moderate pace with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Requires manual dexterity for frequent use of a computer keyboard, calculator, and other office equipment.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
  • Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate compassion and empathy in interactions with others.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively; possesses interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, and team members.
  • Knowledgeable in medical specialties and specific assisting tasks related to the role.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and efficiency in task completion, with strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in navigating and understanding computer software systems in a medical office setting.
  • Maintains current knowledge of clinic policies, procedures, and medical terminology relevant to the position.
  • Standard Qualifications

  • Education : Associates Degree or Technical Certificate from an accredited college for Medical Assistants; certification preferred.
  • Experience : Minimum of one-year work experience in public contact job, preferably service-related. Experience or interest in health care.
