About the role

We\'re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our backend team as we shape the future of AI-powered content creation. This leader will balance technical vision with people management, helping us maintain our rapid pace of innovation while supporting the growth of our engineering talent.

At Gamma, our backend platform is the foundation for delivering all our application features. You\'ll play a critical role in leading a team of 10+ backend and fullstack engineers, driving technical excellence, and scaling our API and multiplayer services to serve millions of users.

This position is an onsite role in San Francisco with a hybrid flexible work culture. You\'ll be expected to come in to our Potrero Hill office 4-5 days per week with a schedule that works best for you.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a diverse team of 10+ backend engineers, actively supporting individual growth, professional development, and team cohesion.
• Guide senior engineers in making strategic technical decisions about architecture, scalability, maintainability, and performance, establishing a culture of technical excellence while balancing long-term technical investments with immediate product needs.
• Provide clear, consistent direction to maintain alignment, focus, and clarity within the frontend engineering team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
• Drive backend hiring and onboarding processes, closely collaborating with recruiting, engineering management, and company leadership to build an outstanding team.
• Actively partner with product, design, and frontend teams to ensure cohesive, innovative feature delivery, and contribute strategically to cross-functional planning and roadmap development.
• Create a productive and supportive environment, proactively identifying and removing obstacles to empower engineers to perform their best work.
• You\'ll lead a vibrant team with engineers who bring unique strengths—from rapid feature delivery and highly available NodeJS services to well thought out distributed systems and creative problem-solving.

Qualifications

You combine deep backend engineering expertise with proven leadership in managing and developing high-performing teams. You\'re an excellent communicator, skilled at bridging technical and non-technical perspectives, aligning team goals with organizational priorities. You value execution, consistently delivering high-quality products. Beyond all this, you\'re genuinely passionate about Gamma\'s mission—creating innovative, AI-powered, collaborative user experiences

Experience with NodeJS and Typescript

Familiarity with AI / ML technologies and their integration into user experiences

Experience working with ETL pipelines

Experience scaling backend APIs to millions of users

Background in building real-time collaborative tools or applications

Experience working with CRDTs and WebSockets for real-time data synchronization

Open source contributions or involvement in technical communities

Experience managing distributed teams or working with remote engineers

Compensation & Benefits

Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including but not limited to experience and expertise in the requirements listed above.
