Job description

Sheriff's Correctional Cadet

The Sheriff's Correctional Cadet is designed to prepare the incumbent for a career in corrections. The incumbent will learn the principles and practices of the Correctional Deputy work in the Sheriff's Department; participate in required training courses (Adult Correctional Core Course and other department specific training courses); and perform routine, non-enforcement duties.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Sheriff's Correctional Cadet differs from the Correctional Deputy, in that the incumbent is a non-sworn civilian who has not yet completed the training requirements for the Correctional Deputy position. It is expected that the Correctional Cadet meet all the requirements and gain the experience and knowledge to become a Correctional Deputy.

Typical Duties

Processes the reception, detention and release of adult inmates. Help maintain institutional security on a 24 hour basis. Safely drive inmates to and from designated locations, including courts, medical facilities, and other secure locations while utilizing a county vehicle. Learn the Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, the policies and procedures of the Tulare County Sheriff's Department, and other applicable laws and regulations. Observe assigned groups of adults engaged in work details and leisure time activities. Apply the policies and procedures of the Tulare County Detention Division. Confer with the Sergeant / Correctional Deputies on problem situations. Write reports of activities and incidents. Learn the principles of jail operations and tasks of the Sheriff's Correctional Deputy. Operate and maintain fire suppression equipment. Appear in court as a witness. Attend training programs and activities that are physically demanding and require good physical conditioning. Keep records of prisoner movements and write reports on courtroom incidents. Essential job duties may be assigned that are not listed above but are relative to this job classification. (Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law.)

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and / or license which are required and equivalent to the following. Knowledge of : Basic principles of observation; Inventory and records-keeping. Math sufficient to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions.

  • Work and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
  • Learn, understand, and interpret criminal justice laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances pertinent to the care and custody of adult prisoners.
  • Learn safety procedures within an adult detention facility and the proper use of restraints, chemical agents and other equipment.
  • Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
  • Adapt quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Work effectively under pressure in a frequently hostile and unpredictable environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, emotional stability, and good judgment.

Education : Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12

th

) grade.

Age : Must be at least twenty (20) years of age at time of application and twenty-one (21) years of age at time of completion of the Adult Corrections Officer Core Course. Special Requirement : Successful completion of the Adult Corrections Officer Core Course is required during the one (1) year probation period for this position. Failure to meet this requirement for any reason will result in termination of employment. If at any time during the completion of the POST Background Investigation, it is determined the Correctional Cadet does not meet the department standards to become a public officer under California Penal Code Section 831.5 this shall result in termination of employment.

License or Certificate : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license.
