Job Summary

The Cellular Translational Research Core (CTRC) is seeking a motivated undergraduate student for a temporary part-time Lab Technician position in our biorepository (9 months). In this role, you will contribute to an important national study called SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial). Your responsibilities will include retrieving, aliquoting, packaging, and shipping human samples to institutions across the country for downstream analyses. The ultimate goal of SPRINT is to determine the role of the APOE ε4 genotype in Alzheimer's disease, and these samples will undergo advanced analyses such as DNA sequencing and proteomics.

As a Lab Technician, you will gain valuable hands-on laboratory experience in a large-scale biomedical research project, while also assisting with data entry in our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) called OpenSpecimen. This role will provide you with experience in sample handling, process improvement, and collaboration with other students and researchers. The position is designed to offer flexibility for your academic schedule and is an excellent opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in science or medicine.

The CTRC is a service-oriented laboratory, and our mission is to provide laboratory services, support, and expertise to accelerate investigator-driven research. If you are qualified and interested, we encourage you to apply and join our collaborative and rewarding core team.

  • Ability to lift boxes or equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Able to lift and handle somewhat heavy freezer towers (approximately 25 lbs).
  • Must have skilled hands, with technical precision and meticulous attention to experimental details.
  • Capable of properly handling precious and irreplaceable biospecimens without compromising their integrity.
  • Skilled and precise when handling frozen samples.
  • Familiarity with the safe handling of liquid nitrogen and other cryopreservation hazards.
  • Competent computer skills, including basic knowledge of sample tracking software.
  • High-level quality control is essential, maintaining 100% accuracy in labeling, sample identification, and tracking.
  • Ability to perform tests and procedures using sophisticated laboratory equipment.
  • Identify, follow, and modify key protocols as needed to meet the lab's specific requirements.
  • Ability to listen and communicate clearly with customers in a friendly, knowledgeable, and timely manner.
  • Professionalism and excellent customer service are expected, given the facility's close interaction with numerous investigators.

Problem Solving This position assists senior laboratory personnel in planning methods and techniques. Work requires exercising independent judgment and basic theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. This position may include limited supervision of entry-level laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent.
