Urologic Oncologist

Department of Urology - VCU Health, Richmond, VA

Mission or goal of unit :

The mission of the Department of Urology within the VCU School of Medicine is the pursuit of excellence in all three areas of an academic surgical practice : patient care, teaching, and research.

Chief Purpose of this Position in Support of Above Mission or Goal :

The Department Urology at VCU / VCU Health System is actively recruiting for an open rank, affiliate, non-tenure track faculty position. The faculty member will be responsible for providing clinical services in urologic oncology and state of the art care to the patients of Central Virginia and beyond. The faculty member will also support the Department with teaching responsibilities for rotating medical students, urology residents, and other learners.

Responsibilities :

Clinical :   The faculty member will be expected to leverage their training and experience in robotic and minimally invasive surgical techniques to build and maintain a productive patient-centered clinical practice focused on urologic oncology. Clinical work will include all aspects of outpatient and inpatient management and treatment. Opportunities will exist to provide clinical services in VCU-owned satellite clinics and hospitals in the region. In addition, a multidisciplinary approach to patient care is encouraged with our colleagues in VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and throughout the health system.

Teaching :  The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the clinic, on the wards, and in the operating room. In addition, the faculty member will be responsible for formal lectures, case presentations, and other didactic sessions geared to rotating medical students, urology residents, and other learners. These sessions will be focused on urologic oncology and other specific areas of interest and expertise. The faculty member will also be encouraged to participate in the day-to-day operations of the urology residency program.

Research :  The faculty member will be expected to participate in team science related to urologic oncology through collaborations with basic, translational, and clinical research faculty in the VCU School of Medicine, the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University, and beyond. The faculty member will be encouraged to engage in clinical trials.

Service :   The faculty member will be expected to serve on departmental, hospital, School of Medicine, and / or University committees as necessary. In addition, the faculty member will be expected to participate in service to their profession through specialty society memberships, conference attendance and presentations, committee memberships, editorial board commitments, and other external service activities.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited U.S. urology residency program in good standing
  • Experience, interest, and skill in the teaching residents, medical students, and other learners
  • Commitment to laboratory and / or clinical research within urologic oncology or other areas of the faculty’s specific interest
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion (or planed completion) of an approved fellowship in urologic oncology as administered by the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) or achievement of similar skills and expertise through specialized clinical practice
  • Teaching experience with medical students, residents, and other learners in urology
  • Additional experience or training in quality improvement, education
