Marine Electrician – Job Description
Marine Electricians are responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems aboard ships, boats, and other marine vessels. Work includes troubleshooting electrical issues, ensuring components meet required safety and quality standards, and supporting vessel construction and repairs in accordance with military or commercial specifications.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Install, cable, and terminate electrical wiring, panels, and switchboards
Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, cable runs, and electrical diagrams
Install and connect lighting, alarms, navigation, communications, and control systems
Test electrical systems for proper functionality using meters and diagnostic tools
Troubleshoot and repair faulty components, wiring, and fixtures
Support system upgrades and modifications during vessel construction and refit
Perform continuity checks, insulation resistance tests, and grounding inspections
Use hand tools and power tools to perform assembly and installation work
Follow safety rules, lockout / tagout procedures, and shipyard requirements
Work with production teams to meet deadlines and maintain quality standards
Skills & Qualifications
Marine or industrial electrical experience required
Ability to bend, pull, route, and secure cable in confined spaces
Knowledge of AC / DC power distribution systems
Familiarity with naval / military standards preferred (if applicable)
Ability to work from drawings with minimal supervision
Must pass required drug and background screenings
Physical Requirements
Ability to climb, kneel, stoop, and work in confined spaces
Lift up to 50 lbs
Work aboard vessels, sometimes at heights or in enclosed environments
