Director of Engineering, Global Payroll Systems

Digital Enterprise Technology (DET) is seeking an Engineering Director to lead Employee Success Technology within the CIO Organization, with a primary focus on Global Payroll Systems. As an engineering leader, you will focus on developing the team around you while delivering robust, scalable technology infrastructure that serves employees across international markets throughout the entire Hire to Retire employee lifecycle.
You will bring your technical expertise to drive teams to success around feature delivery and management for complex global employee systems, with particular emphasis on payroll operations and compliance. You are as enthusiastic about building a world‑class engineering team as you are about solving challenging technical problems. You will help shape, direct and execute our technology vision, blending customer‑centric principles, industry‑changing innovation, and reliable delivery of new technologies.
What You Will Do
Technical Leadership & Strategic Vision
- Drive the technical vision for comprehensive global Employee Success capabilities across all employee lifecycle stages, with specialized expertise in payroll systems.
- Build and evolve large‑scale distributed systems to reliably process billions of data points across the complete employee technology stack.
- Lead development of cloud‑native platforms on public cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, Azure) with focus on scalability, security, and compliance.
Team Development & Management
Build, lead, and scale multiple engineering teams (2+ teams) focused on Employee Success infrastructure and applications, with specialized teams dedicated to global payroll systems.Recruit and attract top engineering talent with expertise in enterprise employee systems, payroll operations, international compliance, and large‑scale data processing.Invest in continuous employee development by mentoring and coaching engineers and technical leads on complex employee technology challenges.Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and customer focus.System Operations & Reliability
Ensure high availability and performance of mission‑critical employee technology services serving global workforce across international markets.Proactively identify reliability and data quality problems, particularly in payroll infrastructure, and drive comprehensive remediation processes.Drive execution and delivery by collaborating with cross‑functional teams, architects, product owners, and engineers across global time zones.Platform Integration & Development
Drive integration strategies across the complete Employee Success technology stack, including Workday HCM, Workday Payroll, ADP Payroll systems, and regional payroll solutions.Implement robust data processing pipelines, API integrations, and automation tools supporting comprehensive employee operations.Build frameworks, infrastructure automation tools, workflows, and validation platforms supporting international compliance.Cross‑Functional Partnership
Partner with Product Management, UX, and business stakeholders to translate employee experience and payroll business requirements into scalable technical solutions.Collaborate with compliance, legal, and HR teams to ensure systems meet international regulatory requirements and data privacy standards.Work with Enterprise Architecture to align Employee Success technology roadmap with broader organizational technology strategy.What We Are Looking For
We are seeking a seasoned, strategic, and technically excellent Engineering Director with a passion for building innovative Employee Success technology solutions in a complex, international environment. The ideal candidate is a visionary technical leader who excels at translating complex employee lifecycle challenges into scalable, compliant engineering solutions while building and mentoring world‑class engineering teams.
Education & Experience Foundation
A related technical degree required.10+ years of software development experience with 5+ years managing engineering teams.5+ years of Workday HCM or similar Employee HRIS engineering experience.Technical Leadership & Architecture
Proven experience leading large‑scale distributed systems, microservices, and distributed architecture.Hands‑on experience with software engineering best practices including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, CI / CD, build processes, testing, and operations.Experience with short release cycles, full software lifecycle, and products released for public consumption.Experience with Agile development methodologies and Scrum Master certification.Team Management & Development
Demonstrated success in hiring, mentoring, and leading engineering teams.Experience providing technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to team members.Strong customer service orientation with desire to help others succeed.Communication & Collaboration
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong organizational and time management abilities.Experience communicating with users, technical teams, and product management to understand requirements and describe technical solutions.Ability to be flexible, proactive, and comfortable working with minimal specifications.Leadership Qualities

Strong knowledge of Salesforce products, platform features, and capabilities.Working knowledge of modern public cloud technologies and services.Experience with advanced Workday capabilities : Extend, Orchestration, WQL, RAAS.Understanding of enterprise architecture principles.Ability to articulate governance value to business and IT executives.Skills in quickly grasping and explaining both technological and business concepts.In office expectations are 10 days / a quarter to support customers and / or collaborate with their teams.

Salary Ranges
For New York-based roles : $230,800 to $334,600.For Colorado-based roles : $192,200 to $278,600.For Washington-based roles : $211,500 to $306,600.For California-based roles : $230,800 to $334,600.For Illinois-based roles : $211,500 to $306,600.#J-18808-Ljbffr
