Description :

The unit has a total of 9 beds for Orthopedic patients and 13 beds for Inpatient Rehabilitation patients.

If the medical-surgical census does not support staffing, the individual may be assigned to Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility patients.

Nurse-patient ratios are 1 : 4 for medical-surgical patients and 1 : 6 for Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility patients.

These numbers may change based on the level of care required and will be reviewed twice daily in staffing meetings.

BLS certification is required for this role.

Common diagnoses include total knees, hips, and shoulders, cerebrovascular accidents, encephalopathy, and lumbar fusions.

The unit may also accommodate "clean" medical-surgical patients when necessary.

Experience in orthopedic care is preferred, along with competency in telemetry, intravenous therapy, foley catheter management, and dressing changes.

Registered Nurses are not required to titrate medications.

There is a charge nurse on each shift, who also takes a patient assignment.

Patient care technicians are assigned to each rotation on nights and assist all patients with activities of daily living and vital signs.

There may be instances when nursing staff have to provide primary care due to urgent needs or absences.

Registered Nurses are responsible for troubleshooting respiratory therapy equipment but not for administering neb treatments.

Telemetry patients are monitored off-site by technicians.

Registered Nurses run strips once a shift, review them, and ensure they are documented.

All nursing staff have completed a basic rhythm interpretation course.

Staffing is not self-scheduled; however, efforts are made to accommodate schedule flexibility.

Every other weekend is required, with rotated holidays to allow staff family time.

If census is low, staff will stay on the unit or float to another medical-surgical unit with similar staffing ratios.

Scrubs are navy blue and are not provided.

There will be three days of classroom training followed by two shifts of precepted training on the floor.

There is a four-shift cancellation policy for 13-week assignments and three shifts for shorter assignments.

A charting system is in place for documentation.

BSN is not required for this position.
