Job description

City Hall Reporter (Enterprise), The California Post

The New York Post is heading West – and this is your chance to be a part of history as we open a brand-new newsroom and make a significant investment in Los Angeles. The California Post will be a game changer, putting the people of the Golden State first and holding the powerful to account across digital platforms and print.

The California Post is seeking an aggressive, enterprise-focused City Hall Reporter to uncover the power struggles, backroom deals, and policy decisions that shape life in the nation’s second-largest city. Los Angeles City Hall is a place of influence, conflict, and intrigue, and this reporter will go beyond the daily headlines to reveal how decisions are made, who is pulling the strings, and how those choices impact Angelenos.

This is a high-profile role requiring relentless curiosity, a track record of cultivating deep and trusted sources, and the skills to produce agenda-setting investigative and enterprise stories. The right candidate thrives in a competitive environment, knows how to dig into documents and data, and can deliver stories that combine rigorous reporting with The Post’s sharp, engaging voice.

Application Instructions : Applicants should submit a cover letter or a short video cover letter. If submitting a video, please include a link to the video in your cover letter or as part of an additional document.

Responsibilities :

  • Cover Los Angeles City Hall as your primary beat, with a focus on watchdog and accountability reporting on the mayor, city council, and city agencies
  • Break exclusive stories and develop long-term investigative projects that illuminate hidden dynamics of power and influence
  • Cultivate, maintain, and expand a deep network of sources across political, business, labor, and advocacy circles
  • Use documents, data, and public records requests to drive investigative reporting and strengthen enterprise stories
  • File a mix of quick-turn scoops and deeper enterprise pieces, with an eye for stories that resonate locally and nationally
  • Pitch original ideas that reveal untold stories and uncover wrongdoing, waste, or abuse of power
  • Collaborate with colleagues across politics, business, and investigative teams to connect the dots and provide broader context
  • Represent The Post on camera, in podcasts, and across social platforms to promote and explain reporting

Requirements :

  • Minimum of 7 years of newsroom reporting experience, with significant time covering politics, government, or investigative beats
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and protect sources who provide unique access and insights
  • Proven success producing investigative or enterprise stories that hold institutions accountable
  • Strong news judgment, sharp writing, and ability to turn stories under tight deadlines
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, competitive newsroom environment
  • Comfort filing public records requests and analyzing documents, data, and financial disclosures
  • Collaborative mindset and a passion for watchdog journalism that makes an impact
  • On-camera experience strongly preferred; reporters should be comfortable presenting their work on video, podcasts, and social media
  • The New York Post offers a competitive benefits package, including medical insurance, vision insurance, 401(k), paid maternity leave, child care support, paid paternity leave, tuition assistance, and disability insurance.

As an equal opportunity employer, the New York Post does not discriminate in hiring or the terms and conditions of employment because of an individual’s race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.
