Summary Of Duties

The Service Engineer applies electrical and / or mechanical expertise to troubleshoot, test and repair the systems and equipment related to the Amtrak's fleet, that includes electrical and diesel locomotives, coaches and trainsets. Leads and directs system and equipment Amtrak's QMP Technicians and provides troubleshooting training to them on various systems. The Service Engineer will be the main technical support for assigned geographical area.

Essential Functions

• Operates the on-board diagnostic monitoring system of the equipment
• Diagnoses cause of electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems malfunction or failure of the control equipment and its components in the trainsets using knowledge of trainsets, technical manuals, and troubleshooting instruments.
• Troubleshoots malfunctions related to the equipment and proposes solutions or modifications to avoid future failures by working with the Maintenance Engineering Department.
• Analyzes and interprets data collected after the revenue service and provides delays and technical reports at the end of their shift.
• Trains Amtrak's QMP employees in proper troubleshooting techniques maintenance and repair procedures to HSR technicians.
• May ride trains on a regular basis to determine enroute performance of control / mechanical systems and to assess dynamic state of system repairs.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Ability to work extended hours and be on call and available on an emergency basis.
• Ability to work-days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage.

• Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills, including experience defining problems, collecting data, and drawing valid conclusions

The salary for the Service Engineer II is $78,600-$101,844, Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and / or long-term incentive plan compensation.
