Position Title : Medical Assistant (MA)
Reports To : Practice Owner, Medical Director, Nurse Supervisor, and / or Collaborating Physician (if applicable per state law)
FLSA Status : Non-Exempt
Job Type : Full-Time / Part-Time / PRN
About the Role
The Medical Assistant (MA) supports physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals in delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centered care. This role combines both administrative and clinical responsibilities, ensuring seamless patient flow and operational efficiency across diverse clinical settings.
Medical Assistants may perform tasks such as taking vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, collecting specimens, assisting with procedures, managing medical records, scheduling appointments, and supporting billing and coding functions. Duties vary by practice setting and must comply with all applicable local, city, municipal, state, and federal regulations governing medical assisting roles.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Completion of a Medical Assistant training program accredited by CAAHEP, ABHES, or another nationally recognized accrediting body if required by local, state, or federal law.
- Current certification or registration as a Medical Assistant if required by jurisdictional regulation (examples : CMA [AAMA], RMA [AMT], CCMA [NHA], NRCMA [NAHP]).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain if required by the practice or applicable law.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and patient safety practices.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in an outpatient clinic, urgent care, specialty practice, or primary care setting.Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and digital documentation workflows.Phlebotomy certification, X-ray certification, or additional credentials if required by state or practice setting.Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.Core Responsibilities
Clinical Support
Obtain and record patient vital signs, height / weight, medical history, and chief complaints.Prepare exam rooms and assist providers during examinations and procedures.Administer medications, immunizations, or injections as permitted by applicable law and regulation.Collect, label, and process laboratory specimens.Perform basic diagnostic tests (e.g., EKGs, point-of-care testing) if within permitted scope of practice.Administrative Support
Schedule appointments, manage patient intake, and support front office operations.Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EHR.Assist with insurance verification, prior authorizations, and billing documentation.Coordinate referrals and follow-up appointments as directed.Patient Care & Education
Provide patient instructions on medications, treatment plans, and follow-up care.Reinforce preventive health education, lifestyle modifications, and chronic disease management guidance under provider direction.Ensure a respectful, supportive, and culturally sensitive care environment.Compliance & Safety
Maintain strict adherence to local, city, municipal, state, and federal regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, CLIA, and state board requirements.Follow infection control, sterilization, and workplace safety standards.Participate in ongoing education, skills training, and compliance refreshers.Key Skills & Competencies
