Certifications : Pharmacy Intern - State Board of Pharmacy preferred, IV sterile compounding certification preferred but not required

Must-Have :

• Knowledge of current hospital and departmental standards for the handling of pharmaceuticals
• Math skills, reading skills, and good communication skills
• Ability to operate equipment used in the preparation of sterile products

Description :

To assist the pharmacist in the preparation of medications.

Perform activities related to the repackaging and compounding, filling, and delivery of medications.

Complete tasks associated with dispensing in a manner appropriate for the ages of patients served (0-adult).

Assist in the procurement, record keeping, storage, and distribution of controlled substances.

Help the pharmacist ensure the appropriateness of all medication doses by correctly entering patient information in the computer.

Follow aseptic technique and infection control in the preparation of sterile products.

Complete annual recertification and achieve a score of at least 90% on the aseptic technique / infection control skills and written exam.

Encourage other technicians and pharmacists to practice aseptic technique and infection control.

Ensure the medications prepared are verified by the pharmacist, documented by a lack of dispensing errors.

Demonstrate competence at batch / medication / prescription order entry.

Work with Pharmacy Support Services personnel to maintain adequate stock of medications and supplies.

Follow procedures established for stock replacement and nonformulary procedures.

Obtain pharmacist initial / final checks and assign dilution and expiration dating labels to medications according to department standards.
