Job description

Job Summary\n\nThe Critical Care Medicine Unit (CCMU) is a medical intensive care unit (6D - 20 beds, 7D - 10 beds) which provides care to the adult medical patient population, including, for example, those patients with diagnoses including cancer, liver, lung or renal disease, sepsis, overdose, and other medical conditions.\n\nThe supervisor role reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director, and is integral to the leadership team in planning and managing the clinical and administrative operations of the units.\n\nIn addition to the administrative supervision of the nursing and assistive personnel staff, as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director, the supervisor role may be required to provide clinical bedside care to the patients of the CCMU.\n\nMission Statement\n\nMIchigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally.   • To assist the department Director in the management of the unit and the provision of patient care.\n
  • To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research.\n
  • To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with Michigan Medicine mission and goal statements.\n
  • Collaborative / consultative relationship with other health professionals or disciplines and administrative personnel.\n
  • Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff, as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.\n\nResponsibilities Include\n\nPersonnel Management : \n
  • Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.\n
  • Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.\n
  • Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.\n
  • Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.\n
  • Facilitate open channels of communication with other nursing leadership teams, peers, staff, and physicians.\n
  • Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Nurse Preceptors, Staff Nurses, and members of the leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.\n\nClinical Practice\n
  • On primarily the evening and night shifts, coordinate or support unit initiatives, administrative needs, committee participation, staffing, or other needs as directed per the Clinical Nursing Director.\n
  • To provide assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff related to clinical practice.\n\nManagement Of Clinical Area\n
  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.\n
  • Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.\n
  • Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit / area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.\n
  • Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.\n
  • Participate in the monitoring or review of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.\n
  • Participate in reviewing the payroll, and reconciling budget components to meet budgetary goals via variance reporting.\n
  • Participate in the hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks.\n
  • Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.\n
  • Participate in developing of unit / area policy / procedure and standards of Nursing Care.\n
  • Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Specialist and Educational Nurse Coordinator to implement organizational or departmental policy changes, and assure adherence to procedures and standards of Nursing Care, including staff compliance in meeting annual mandatory competencies and screening.\n
  • Collaborate with Educational Nurse Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation.\n
  • Collaborate with intra- and inter- disciplinary, and intra- and inter departmental colleagues to create the Ideal Patient Experience.\n
  • Anticipate and respond to patient / family issues and concerns.\n\nQuality Assurance And Research\n
  • Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.\n
  • Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.\n

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR\n
  • Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing\n
  • Minimum five (5) years RN experience.\n
  • Minimum two (2) years recent (within the last 5 years) RN ICU experience.\n
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples inlcude Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.)\n

  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.\n
  • Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer data bases\n
  • Evidence of active unit engagement in unit initiatives or committees such as UBC or workload committee membership, liaison or champion roles, or other unit initiative participation.\n
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.\n
  • Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.\n
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively within colleague and unit leadership team including the Clinical Nursing Director, supervisor, clinical nurse specialist, and other unit leadership members, administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates.\n\nWork Schedule\n\nHours / Week : 40 hours / week\n\nShift : Primarily Nights, flexibility to work weekdays and weekends, and flex work hours to participate in nursing administrative meetings and or training.\n\nThe expected staffing component is flexible from 0-30%.\n\nLocation : University Hospital- 6D / 7D Medical Intensive Care Unit (CCMU)\n\nModes of Work\n\nPositions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile / remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
