A pre-op intake nurse performs pre-surgical assessments, reviews patient health histories and medications, educates patients and families on procedures, ensures necessary documentation and consent are complete, maintains communication with the surgical and anesthesia teams to prepare the patient for surgery and ensure a safe perioperative experience. May also be required to perform clinical duties in both Pre-op and PACU when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment :
Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments, gathering detailed health histories, reviewing current medications, identifying allergies, and any other relevant patient information .
Patient Education :
Provide clear and understandable instructions for pre-operative care, explaining the surgical process, what to expect, and potential risks to both the patient and their family
Documentation :
Accurately record all assessment findings, test results, and patient-related findings, ensuring all necessary documents are completed and signed. Detail oriented in chart organization .
Collaboration :
Work closely with the surgical and anesthesia teams, and referring doctor's facilities, communicating critical information like allergies, anesthesia contraindications, and surgical risks to ensure patient safety and readiness.
Ensure surgical readiness by verifying consent, reviewing test results, and monitoring patients for safety concerns, such as fall risk .
Emergency Preparedness :
Respond to surgical emergencies or complications based on nursing standards and protocols.
