Job description

Description:

The primary responsibilities for this position include teaching undergraduate-level courses, conducting research, student advising, student mentoring and recruitment, curriculum development, conducting scholarly activities, and all other activities required for tenure. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to engaging in accreditation procedures, program assessment, and service to the department, College, and University as needed. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing visionary leadership to advance the department’s academic and research missions in AI.

  • Fostering a collaborative environment that supports faculty, staff, and students.

  • Engaging in high-quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Conducting and overseeing cutting-edge research in areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, large language models, and AI ethics.

  • Securing extramural funding to support AI research initiatives.

  • Mentoring and supporting the professional development of faculty and students.

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of innovative AI curricula.

  • Representing the department and college in university-wide and external AI initiatives.

On June 18, 2024, The Cabin Road Foundation provided funding for endowed professorships in the College of Engineering and the College of Science and Technology to provide the resources, otherwise unavailable, to:

  • Attract Top Talent: Provides resources needed to support faculty who will conduct high-impact research and innovative teaching.

  • Enhance Research Capabilities: Distinguished faculty in Artificial Intelligence (AI) can lead groundbreaking research projects, secure research grants, and publish influential papers, elevating the university’s reputation and impact in the field.

  • Foster Interdisciplinary Collaboration: AI is an inherently interdisciplinary field. Endowed

professorships can facilitate collaboration across departments such as computer science, engineering, mathematics, and more, fostering innovation and comprehensive education.

  • Mentorship and Student Development: Distinguished AI faculty can mentor students, guiding them through complex coursework, research projects, and career development, ensuring that they are well-prepared for the evolving job market.

  • Industry Partnerships: Endowed professorships in AI can help establish and strengthen partnerships with industry leaders, providing students with internships, job placements, and real-world experience.

The Cabin Road Foundation Endowed Professor of AI is an accomplished academic leader with a distinguished record of teaching, research, and professional achievement in AI. The Endowed Professor of AI is a visionary leader with proven expertise in AI, a strong record of scholarly publications, and a history of securing extramural funding. The Endowed Professor of AI possesses the ability to build and lead interdisciplinary teams, foster collaboration, and drive impactful research initiatives. The Endowed Professor of AI has experience in curriculum development, successful grant management, and the integration of AI across various domains. The Endowed Professor of AI is an inspiring and strategic thinker, capable of managing large-scale research programs, mentoring faculty and students, and contributing to the university’s mission of excellence in AI-driven innovation. The Endowed Professor of AI is committed to interdisciplinary collaboration. The Endowed Professor of AI helps shape the future of AI at North Carolina A&T State University by leveraging resources, partnerships, and cutting-edge research to make a lasting impact in academia and industry.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 14,311 students in Fall 2024, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 master’s programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is America’s top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science bachelor’s programs, as well as a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks no. 3 in master’s degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, no. 4 in master’s degrees in Engineering, and no. 11 best business school for women in the nation.

Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as “R2-High Research Activity” in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve “R1-Very High Research Activity” status. It also holds Carnegie’s earned credential in Community Engagement and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities ( APLU ) Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. With an annual economic impact of $2.4 billion, N.C. A&T plays a vital role as a higher-education economic driver in North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad region and across a state that is ranked No. 1 in the nation for the second straight year as “best for business” by the CNBC financial network.

The College of Engineering ( COE ), with over 2,500 students, has 5 Doctoral programs, 8 Masters of Science Degree programs, and EAC ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Architectural, Bio-, Biological, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a CAC ABET -accredited program Computer Science. The College’s focus is on cultivating leaders who excel in academics, innovation, and research; where the 5 research cluster areas of the COE are Autonomous Systems, Cybersecurity and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability, Healthcare Applications and Complex Systems and Networks. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering comprises a diverse group of faculty members and offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. The department is committed to excellence in AI education and research, with faculty and graduate students conducting research in areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, multiagent systems, Large Language Models and AI ethics. The department provides a supportive environment for innovative research and collaboration. The Computer Science Department has 14 full-time faculty members. Current enrollment includes 500 BS, 81 MS, and 30 PhD students. Research and education funding has come from the NSF , DoD, and DoE, and corporations. The department also leads the university’s Center for Cyber Defense, designated as a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education and Cyber Defense Research by the NSA and the DHS . Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related discipline.

  • Established record of teaching, research, and professional accomplishment in AI.

  • Qualifications for the rank of Full Professor.

  • Proven leadership abilities.

  • Strong record of scholarly work and extramural funding.

  • Experience in curriculum development and successful grant management.

  • Significant administrative experience.

Preferred:

  • Distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments in AI.

  • Appreciation for the integration of learning, discovery, and engagement.

  • Ability to bring teams together and support them in achieving important tasks on time and within budget.

  • Imaginative and inspiring leadership style.
