Join the 2026 New York Times Fellowship class as a graphics editor in New York.

As a Graphics fellow, you will report, write, design and code graphics and multimedia stories, including the presentation of statistical visualizations, video, photography and animation. You will work with other Graphics staff members and department leaders to develop skills and judgment as a creator of visual stories, on both daily news coverage and on enterprise projects across multiple platforms.

The Graphics desk, which covers all topics across the news cycle, is a group of journalists and visual thinkers with backgrounds ranging from architecture to cartography to computer science. We are curious about all kinds of things and want you to bring your own curiosity to bear in creative approaches to storytelling.

This is an in-office position and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. You may be required to work some nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities :

Respond quickly to breaking news

Report on news to produce visual and data-based multimedia journalism

Design and build graphics and other multimedia using web-based markup and coding languages

Participate in training and social programs designed for the fellowship

Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence () and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications :

No more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience, excluding internships

Interest in data visualization, cartography or other forms of visual journalism and the skills to start producing work in these areas

Skill in interface design and information graphic design

2+ years of experience working with graphics tools and software, like D3.js, R, JavaScript, Python, HTML / CSS and GIS

Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Illustrator

A portfolio demonstrating experience with news graphics or interactive visualizations

Preferred Qualifications :

Record of multiple news or visual internships or equivalent experience

Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to change in an unpredictable news and production environment

Curiosity and interest in the news, and in finding innovative approaches to telling stories

Experience working collaboratively with members of a mixed-media team

You may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as a graphics editor, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The fellowship program will begin on or about June 1, 2026, and end on May 21, 2027, subject to satisfactory performance. There is no guarantee of a full-time position upon completion of the program.
