Guilford Technical Community College ( GTCC ) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Adjunct Instructor to teach students enrolled in the Power Pathways Program. Assignment will involve working with students with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities ( IDD ). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with Exceptional Children (EC) or individuals with IDD and possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. This role involves delivering high-quality instruction, developing engaging curriculum materials, and fostering a supportive learning environment to help students succeed in their educational and career goals. The candidate will report directly to the Associate Dean of Adult Education and will work closely with the Access to Achievement Advisor to ensure student success and progression.

Duties / Functions

  • Provide classroom and / or online Deliver engaging and effective instruction to students including maintaining student attendance records, and monitoring progress and retention. Determine needs of individual students in the program. Create and utilize engaging lesson plans aligned to the NC Adult Education Content Standards and the curriculum guidelines of the Power Pathways Program.
  • Serve as a substitute instructor as needed to provide instructional coverage in the absence of regular instructor.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods and instructional technologies to accommodate diverse learning styles.
  • Assess student progress through examinations, assignments, and projects, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Supervise and advise students regarding attendance, educational and occupational goals and individual plans for progress.  Manage classroom behavior and uphold student code of conduct.  Ensure that class records are completed accurately and in a timely manner.   Provide academic advising and support to students, helping them to achieve their educational and career objectives. Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and engagement.  Work closely with the Access to Achievement Advisor to monitor and support student progress and address any challenges.
  • Integrate contextualized career preparation and CASAS or TABE preparation into daily lesson and classroom activities.  Collaborate with other POWER Pathways instructors to ensure Integrated Education and Training components across all classes. Collaborate with other GTCC faculty and staff to develop and refine course materials and instructional strategies. Ensure that the curriculum aligns with industry standards and best practices in working with individuals with IDD .
  • Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills : adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork. Participate in local, regional and state professional development initiatives to improve knowledge and skill base.  Stay current with developments in the field of training for individuals with  IDD and participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Attend department meetings and contribute to program planning and evaluation.
  • Recruit students for program expansion. Work with community partners to ensure adequate enrollment.

  • Education Required

    Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees and certifications are preferred.

    Experience Required

  • Previous teaching experience, particularly in a community college or similar educational setting, is highly desirable.
  • Practical experience in the food service or customer service industry is a plus.
  • Experience working with Exceptional Children or individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is highly desirable.

  • Experience in completing and reviewing course documentation, i.e. rosters, contracts, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and balance multiple priorities.
  • Experience working and / or teaching in the food service / culinary industry.
  • Physical Demands

  • Schedule may include some evenings and occasional weekends in order to accommodate public / student needs.  Assignment may require instruction on the Greensboro, High Point, or Jamestown campuses, or at a community partner location.
  • Work requires mostly sitting with some walking or standing.
  • Work requires carrying objects or loads of 20 pounds or less.
  • Rare (less than 15%) exposure to hazardous chemicals, filth, fumes, adverse weather, or personal health and safety risks.
