Job description

Job Summary

The Assistant Engineer Civil (Level I / II) performs a variety of civil engineering duties related to the design, surveying, materials testing, and construction of public works projects. These projects may include roads, bridges, traffic control systems, drainage systems, water and wastewater facilities, airports, new building construction, and structural remodels.

Assistant Engineer Civil (Level I) is the trainee-level classification in the civil engineering series. Incumbents perform basic field and office tasks under close supervision in connection with planning, design, construction, and maintenance of various engineering projects. As experience is gained, incumbents are assigned more complex responsibilities and may promote to Level II upon demonstrating proficiency.

Assistant Engineer Civil (Level II) is the journey-level classification. Under general supervision, incumbents manage routine office or field projects of moderate complexity and are responsible for seeing them through to completion. They may serve as resident engineers on smaller construction projects, provide technical guidance to subordinate staff, and perform assignments reviewed by an Associate Civil Engineer or higher-level supervisor.

The duties, knowledge, and abilities of both levels are similar, with Level II performing with greater independence and less supervision.
