Job Description
The Director of Government Relations will strengthen and cultivate relationships with Members of Congress, Senators, staffers, and organizations that are engaged in issues facing the financial sector, with a focus on Democratic outreach. Reporting to the Head of Government Relations, the Director will represent TD's interests, track national policy developments, and coordinate interactions with key policymakers. While the Director will focus on federal outreach, they will contribute to Government Relations strategies at all levels, from local to federal. Government Relations is part of Corporate and Public Affairs (CAPA), and the Director will be part of an extended leadership team that is tasked with strengthening and protecting TD's reputation and growing TD's influence in Washington and across the East Coast.
Responsibilities
- Represent TD Bank's interests and coordinate industry positions with federal regulatory and legislative bodies as well as national trade associations.
- Build internal networks for a holistic approach to government relations, working closely with Community Relations, Corporate and Public Affairs, Legal and Compliance.
- Advise senior officers and internal stakeholders on public policy issues of interest and concern to TD Bank.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, conducting research, analysis and supporting material preparation.
- Coordinate communication efforts and anticipate short‑term and long‑term objectives / outcomes.
- Support the planning and execution of a broad portfolio of activities, coordinating with a variety of internal stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with business heads and partners across the organization.
- Maintain performance management tools, track milestones, and provide summary reports for executive review.
- Enhance TD Bank's presence in Washington and create a national platform to articulate the company's positions.
- Represent TD Bank before Congress, the Administration and related organizations on issues related to the company's business, advocating sought outcomes.
- Build strategic alliances and partnerships with third‑party public policy groups.
- Demonstrate significant political acumen and bi‑partisan contacts with Members of Congress and congressional staff.
- Communicate with members of Congress, Executive Branch officials and associations on policy matters.
- Cooperate in the development and management of TD Bank's PAC and grassroots political network.
Qualifications
4‑year degree or equivalent experience.10+ years of experience as a Government Relations executive with a major multinational organization, a congressional staff member, or senior public servant.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Demonstrated understanding of US federal, state, and local government operations.Strong planner, communicator, with integrity, judgment, and discretion.In‑depth knowledge of US congressional and Executive Branch policy‑making processes.Experience in managing consultants and advising senior‑level corporate executives.Track record of accomplishing major legislative policy agendas and coalition building.High degree of personal integrity and ability to manage sensitive information.Superior communication skills, confident, transparent, concise.Physical Requirements
Domestic travel – Occasional (1–33%). International – Never. Perform sedentary work – Continuous; multiple tasks – Continuous; standard office equipment – Continuous. Standing – Occasional; walking – Occasional; short lifts (under 25 lbs) – Occasional. No daily heavy lifting. Continuous concentration for long periods required.
