Position : Fiber Optic Technician
Location : Scanlon Fiber Optics / Pittsburgh, PA
Key Responsibilities
- Install & maintain fiber optic cables in aerial (poles, bucket trucks, extension ladders up to ~40 ft.) and underground environments (manholes, vaults).
- Fusion splice & terminate single-mode, multimode, and ribbon fiber with quality control via OTDR or optical power meter testing.
- Measure optical loss on each splice / connector to ensure network performance
- Troubleshoot and repair outages, including those caused by storms, accidents, or environmental conditions, often on a 24 / 7 on-call basis.
- Maintain documentation (splice records, termination box logs, test results, service reports).
- Work safely and efficiently, following OSHA standards and using PPE during outdoor, confined space, and elevated work.
- Provide excellent customer interaction, coordinating site access, communicating around disruptions, and resolving technical queries via phone or in person.
Qualifications
Education : High school diploma or equivalent required; technical / trade / vocational certification preferredExperience :13 years in fiber optics or OSP (outside plant) environmentHands-on with fiber splicing & testing equipment, OTDR, power meters, fusion splicerSkills & Certifications :FOA CFOT or equivalent fiber certification (CFOS splicing / testing / OSP) is a plusValid driver's licenseKnowledge of network architectures and ability to read network diagrams / CAD / FTTx plansProficiency with Microsoft Office or project software (e.g., Excel, Outlook) is not needed, but preferredStrong communication, problem-solving, and detail-oriented mindsetPhysical & Work Conditions
