Job description

Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) Opportunity

The Joshua School's Englewood campus is searching for a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) to join our team! We are a Colorado Department of Education (CDE) approved facility school and partner closely with several local school districts to provide intensive services for our students. Our nationally recognized holistic approach has achieved superior results through our structured environments, teaching strategies based on behavioral intervention, data collection, and celebration of our students. Using Applied Behavior Analysis, we identify, with families and teams, the needs of each student to create an independent and fulfilling life. These might include social skills, communication and language, academics, daily living and community skills, vocational skills and more. We believe that every child is smart, competent, and whole exactly as they are, and dignity is the birthright of every human being. We believe our children and their families have a right to aspire to a life of their choosing.

Position Summary

The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is responsible for providing targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student literacy and social engagement within the school environment. In collaboration with the Lead Teacher and Program Director, the SLP provides student-specific recommendations that promote independence in accessing the learning environment (e.g., reading activities, group activities, community and vocational skills), with an emphasis on social communication, AAC and functional communication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Intervention Planning, Implementation, Training & Collaboration :

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings within students' overall programs, offer recommendations, and develop individual plans to improve student literacy and social communication skills.
  • Develop speech and language-based intervention plans based on student needs and evaluation results, specifically to address literacy and social communication deficits that impede learning in current school / vocation settings.
  • Develop small group and dyad activities for students in the areas of literacy and social communication.
  • Use Behavior Skills Training to coach Lead Teachers, Instructional Assistants, family members, and other team members to implement speech and language recommendations and strategies.

Assessment & Evaluation :

  • Evaluate each student's abilities and formulate each student's communication profile through records review, formal and informal assessments, skill observation, and interviews. Synthesize intake evaluation results into a brief written report which reflects strengths and barriers to student participation in the current school / vocational setting.
  • Provide brief, targeted assessments regarding literacy and social communication deficits annually, or as student issues are referred by Lead Teacher / Program Director, and write targeted recommendations that are easy for staff to understand and implement.
  • Probe strategies directly with students to identify which may be effective.
  • Recommend adaptations and modifications to the environment including assistive technology.
  • Research and team to set up assistive technology, and train staff to use and maintain equipment appropriately.
  • Make recommendations to families / district representatives as necessary for additional supports that each student might benefit from outside of school.
  • Progress Monitoring & Documentation :

  • Document student progress with daily notes, analyze data for speech and language-related IEP objectives, and provide recommendations for changes in programming based on progress or lack thereof.
  • Document SLP / SLPA services to ensure accountability of service provision and to meet standards for reimbursement of services as appropriate.
  • Maintain clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards, state guidelines, and school system policies.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities :

  • Provide legal and ethical clinical supervision of Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, assuming responsibility for the students served by Assistant.
  • Other Duties :

  • Attend regular meetings with Lead Teacher and Program Director at least once per quarter.
  • Attend each classroom clinical meeting at least once per month, or as requested.
  • Attend, participate in, and develop / present staff development and training as requested.
  • Attend IEP meetings, and participate in IEP and BIP development and implementation.
  • Maintain inventory of school-wide SLP materials, paying special attention to those on loan from school districts.
  • Discuss any equipment or material needs with Program Director to identify space in the budget.
  • Maintain competency in various forms of technology, including but not limited to computer, cell phone, Google Drive applications, shared online documents, and speech generating devices.
  • Adhere to federal and state legislation, regulation, and policies that affect speech language therapy practice.
  • Be a positive role model for students, families, and co-workers.
