Job Description
The Steam Engineer contributes to the success of The Los Angeles Athletic Club by ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout the property. This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and repairing boilers, HVAC, and other essential building equipment to maintain optimal facility performance and guest comfort while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate, monitor, and maintain all boiler and mechanical systems to ensure safe and efficient performance.
Conduct daily inspections of boilers, chillers, compressors, and other critical building systems.
Perform routine maintenance, including lubrication, cleaning, and filter changes.
Troubleshoot and repair pumps, motors, valves, steam traps, and mechanical controls.
Log all operating data (pressure, temperature, fuel consumption, etc.) in the daily equipment logbook.
Test and treat boiler water to maintain proper chemical balance and prevent corrosion or scaling.
Respond promptly to building maintenance and emergency calls, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing issues.
Ensure compliance with city, county, and state safety codes, including maintaining current permits and inspections.
Maintain all mechanical rooms in a safe, organized, and clean condition.
Communicate with management regarding equipment status, necessary repairs, and preventive maintenance needs.
Assist contractors and vendors as needed to support maintenance and repair projects.
Support sustainability and energy conservation efforts by monitoring system efficiency and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong working knowledge of steam generation, boiler operations, and related mechanical systems.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, and electrical repair methods.
Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and safety practices.
Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 3 years experience operating and maintaining steam boilers or equivalent mechanical systems preferred.
Valid Steam Engineer License (City of Los Angeles) required.
EPA Universal Refrigeration Certification preferred.
Previous experience in a hospitality, commercial, or institutional facility preferred.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical activities such as climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Ability to work in hot, humid, or confined environments such as boiler rooms and mechanical spaces.
Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
