The ideal candidate will share Clovis Community College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2024-2025 academic year, we enrolled over 17,000 students in which 53% identify as Latinx, 13% as Asian / Pacific Islander, 4% as Black / African American, 25% as White, 1% as American Indian / Alaska Native, and 4% as multiracial. Clovis Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to providing services responsive to the students it serves.

Reporting to the Dean of Student Services at Clovis Community College, this counselor assignment will assist students with counseling services and educational planning. The counselor will cover a full range of general counseling services during days, evenings, and weekends. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following :

  • Provide comprehensive counseling services to students, including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling;
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, counseling and follow-up services to students;
  • Assist students with major selection, career development planning, and goal identification;
  • Maintain close working relationships with faculty, feeder high schools, community and other student services support programs;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Guided Pathways, Student Equity Achievement (SEA), and other student success initiatives;
  • Lead and collaborate in developing programs and student support services designed to improve student retention and graduation rates;
  • Develop and maintain professional communications and strategic alliances with Colleges & Universities;
  • Work collaboratively with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives and provisions of counseling services;
  • Collaborate with various departments and committees throughout the college to increase access and success for students;
  • Utilize technology to track student progress, implement efficient support services, provide counseling services, and make presentations in classrooms and other group settings;
  • Review data on student success and achievement and use the information to adjust student support services;
  • Provide intentional case-management services to assigned students and provide follow up services including Early Alert responses and resource referrals;
  • Assist, as needed, with articulation, student outreach, and recruitment activities;
  • Provide assistance and referrals to on / off campus resources and student support services including Admissions & Records, CalWORKs, Career / Transfer & Employment Center, DSP&S, Financial Aid, Academic Success Centers, TRiO, and off-campus community resources;
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support to students seeking to complete a certificate, associate degree, or transfer;
  • Monitor and implement programs in compliance with federal, State, district, and college regulations, policies, and procedures;
  • Provide counseling services, as needed, during days, evenings, and weekends at on and off-site locations;
  • Develop and / or revise curriculum and programs, including program review and student learning outcomes for courses and programs to assess student learning;
  • Participate in the accreditation process;
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as assigned by management as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; and

  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential; OR
  • The equivalent education and / or experience (requires an equivalency).
  • NOTES :

    A bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

    Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian / Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one's relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
  • Experience as a counselor in higher education, preferably at a community college;
  • Experience developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
  • Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
  • Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;
  • Knowledge of and experience working with low-income and / or potential first generation college bound students;
  • Experience implementing retention strategies;
  • Knowledge of statewide initiatives and best practices in student services;
  • High impact teaching and / or counseling practices;
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
  • Conditions of Employment

    181 duty days per year.

    Salary and Benefits

    Starting annual salary is $71,054 - $108,773 based on education and experience. Duty days will be prorated based upon start of assignment. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher's Retirement System (CalSTRS).

    Selection Procedure

    Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

    From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection advisory committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

  • The selection advisory committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the "recommended candidates". These candidates will be forwarded to theVice President and College President for final interviews.

    A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
