About the Role :

The Visitor Experience Associate at the International African American Museum plays a pivotal role in shaping memorable and meaningful visits for all guests. This position is dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service by engaging visitors with the museum's exhibits, history, and cultural significance. The associate ensures a welcoming, informative, and safe environment, facilitating smooth visitor flow and addressing inquiries or concerns promptly. By embodying the museum’s mission and values, the associate helps foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of African American heritage. Ultimately, this role contributes to enhancing the overall visitor satisfaction and supports the museum’s reputation as a premier cultural destination.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in customer service or visitor-facing roles, preferably in a museum, cultural institution, or related environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage a diverse audience.
  • Basic proficiency with computer systems and ticketing software.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and navigate the museum environment comfortably.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Cultural Studies, or related field.
  • Experience working in arts, entertainment, or cultural institutions.
  • Multilingual abilities to assist a broader range of visitors.
  • Training or certification in first aid or emergency response.
  • Familiarity with African American history and cultural heritage.
  • Responsibilities :

  • Greet and welcome visitors warmly, providing clear information about exhibits, programs, and museum amenities.
  • Assist visitors with ticketing, membership inquiries, and navigation throughout the museum space.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to visitor questions, concerns, or special requests to ensure a positive experience.
  • Monitor visitor areas to maintain safety, cleanliness, and adherence to museum policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with museum staff and volunteers to support special events, educational programs, and tours.
  • Collect visitor feedback and report observations to management to help improve services and visitor engagement.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of museum exhibits, history, and cultural context to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Skills :

    The Visitor Experience Associate utilizes strong communication skills daily to engage visitors, answer questions, and provide clear directions, ensuring each guest feels valued and informed. Customer service skills are essential for managing diverse visitor needs and resolving any issues with professionalism and empathy. Organizational skills help the associate manage ticketing processes, maintain orderly visitor flow, and support event coordination efficiently. Knowledge of museum content and cultural context allows the associate to enrich visitor interactions with meaningful information. Additionally, problem-solving and adaptability are critical when responding to unexpected situations or special visitor requests, ensuring a seamless and positive experience for all.

    Generally 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with half hour lunch.
