FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Hunter College Department of Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies located on the 68th Street campus on the Upper East Side of Manhattan offers students a critical understanding of the political, cultural, social, and ideological forces that have shaped the experiences of people of African, Puerto Rican and Latinx diasporas. Hunter College has both a teaching and research mission.

The Department of Africana, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies at Hunter College of The City University of New York invites applications for an assistant or associate professor specializing in the literatures and expressive practices of the African diaspora with a focus on the Caribbean. This is a full-time tenure track or tenured appointment (depending on the rank). The position will begin in the Fall 2026 semester.
Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain an active research agenda and publication record in the field of African diasporic Caribbean literatures and cultures.
• Teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced level courses in the interdisciplinary field of Africana Studies with a preferred focus on diasporic Anglophone Caribbean literatures, cultures and expressive practices.
• Pursue professional development to remain current with scholarship in areas of research and teaching responsibility; contribute to long-term curricular development and offerings in the department.
• Serve on programmatic, departmental, divisional, and college committees as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Assistant or Associate:
The Department seeks a candidate with expertise in Anglophone Caribbean literary cultures and expressive practices who is equally conversant with Hispanophone and/or Francophone literary cultures and expressive practices. To qualify for this position, applicants should have an earned a Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature, or related field (e.g., Africana studies, Black studies, Black and Latinx studies, Caribbean studies, American studies, or Women, Gender and sexuality studies).” All candidates must provide evidence of commitment to teaching excellence, demonstrated pedagogical success as evidenced in teaching evaluations, a record of sustained scholarship (for associate professors) or scholarly promise (for assistant professors), and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

While the preferred area of expertise is the Anglophone Caribbean, pan-Caribbean literary and cultural histories will also be considered. We seek a scholar with an interdisciplinary research profile and an ability to engage with Caribbean and diasporic cultural and literary studies through a variety of literary and expressive media; colonialism and cultural imperialism; postcolonial studies; gender and sexuality studies; and other fields of diasporic Caribbean inquiry.

We are particularly interested in applicants who can teach introductory and advanced-level interdisciplinary courses grounded in literary studies and expressive practices, and cultural studies.

The following qualifications are preferred: knowledge of the global African diaspora, evidence of strong student and peer evaluations, a record of service, commitment to mentoring students, and productive scholarly and pedagogical engagement with technology, digital humanities, and new media.

COMPENSATION

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.

Assistant Professor Salary: $90,838- $109,025
Associate Professor Salary: $102,408- $118,070

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will increase by approximately 9.54% with an additional increase of 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
