Corrections Officer

The City of Issaquah is now offering a $10,000 signing bonus for lateral corrections officers!!! Paid in three (3) installments : $3,000 on the first paycheck following hire, $3,000 following successful completion of the field training program and $4,000 following successful completion of the new hire's probationary period. This equates to $10,000 in your first year on top of our competitive wages!

As a Corrections Officer, you'll play a crucial role in the operations of our city jail. Your work will involve maintaining the security and welfare of jail inmates, supervising daily activities, and working closely with other law enforcement professionals. You'll need to understand and respect the cultures, languages, disabilities, and socio-economic situations of those you interact with. To be successful, you should be comfortable with :

  • Assuring the security and welfare of jail inmates.
  • Supervising, observing, moving, escorting, and securing inmates during daily activities.
  • Performing duties such as fingerprinting, initial custody taking, and inmate booking and release.
  • Operating a control room, and monitoring closed-circuit television cameras and emergency monitors.

    Essential Functions

  • Assure the security and welfare of jail inmates; supervise inmates' daily activities; screen items going in and coming out of inmate's cells; make routine security checks; assure assigned area is maintained in an orderly manner.
  • Observe, direct, escort, move and supervise jail inmates during daily activities including meals, court appearances, work details, interviews, commissary, appointments, sick calls and other activities; lock down and secure inmates.
  • Supervise inmate visitation ensuring safety and security for all.
  • Perform fingerprinting duties for the Records division of the Police Department for concealed pistol license applications.
  • Take initial custody of prisoners; search prisoners to remove contraband and weapons; issue clothing; process, photograph, fingerprint and place prisoners in cells.
  • Communicate with other jail personnel regarding activities and incidents in the jail; respond to alarms and take appropriate action according to procedural guidelines;
  • Coordinate the release of inmates for court appearance or health needs; review documents such as court orders and physician's orders; release inmates to law enforcement officers or other authorized transport personnel as appropriate.
  • Perform pre-booking, booking, pre-release and release functions to assure that information regarding inmates entering or leaving the jail is properly recorded.
  • Makes initial assessment of inmate for any medical, safety, or security reasons.
  • Maintains direct contact with inmates who may be mentally unstable, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or potentially physically volatile.
  • Prepares and maintains records and logs related to daily activities, bookings, maintenance needs and inmates; shred and dispose of records as authorized.
  • Order and dispense supplies and maintain related records; dispense medication as needed and as specified by medical staff.
  • Operates control room; monitors and operates closed circuit television cameras and emergency monitors; controls all entrances, doors, and gates within the facility; and watches for potentially dangerous, suspicious situations, or activities within the facility.
  • Process court documents and provides inmate information to other law enforcement agencies, the courts and other jail personnel.
  • Assist with the laundry, kitchen, janitorial, medical and other functions in the jail as needed; supervise trustees in the accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. Previous Corrections experience desired. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to pass a police background check including criminal history, credit history, drug exam, polygraph and psychological exam.
  • Must pass Cooper test (physical fitness) and complete Criminal Justice Training Corrections Academy.
  • Access certification
  • Maintain and operate a portable Breathalyzer unit.
  • Maintain and operate a taser.
  • Valid WA State driver's license with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certification.
  • AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS The following are automatic disqualifiers. Applicants should not apply to our agency if they indicate any of the automatic disqualifiers.

  • 1 or more traffic crime convictions in last 5 years (DWI, Suspended, Reckless, etc).
  • Suspension of driver's license within past 5 years.
  • 3 or more moving violations in past 3 years.
  • 3 or more at-fault accidents in past 3 years.
  • Have used marijuana within the past year.
  • Illegal use of ANY controlled substance while employed in a criminal justice capacity.
  • Illegal opiate use.
  • Hallucinogen use within past 10 years. No more than 3 uses total.
  • Illegal use of 3 or more different controlled substances.
  • No illegal sale of ANY drug, including marijuana.
  • Pattern of illegal use of prescription medication.
  • The use of ANY illegal drugs, except marijuana, within the past 3 years.
  • Have ever illegally used a drug after submitting application to any Law Enforcement agency.
  • Any adult felony conviction.
  • Any misdemeanor, or felony conviction while employed in a criminal justice capacity.
  • Been convicted of any crime under a domestic violence statute.
  • Previous revocation or denial of CJTC certified status, or suspension of current CJTC certified status.
  • Failure to pay income tax or child support.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Record-keeping techniques, maintaining records and preparing reports.
